That is the going rate for Centers that aren't exactly elite. It's not terrible.
- tomburton99

The rate is fine. I just don't see Nicos agent advising him to give up 8 years at that rate when he could be earning more down the road.

yea I doubt it'll be a long-term deal, which is scary because I don't want to lose this guy in the middle of his prime. The nature of the beast, as it were. Not used to developing top-line talents like this. I don't want to think back to Parise, but that's really our last experience.

Im trying to think of a team that has to dump money or if anyone on devils is traded and we keep most of that salary. I can only think #6 and #19.

Trade proposal

To Tampa: Vats 50% retained salary

To NJD: Vancouver 1st round pick + Callahan contract

We get a very good 1st rounder, Tampa sheds 3.36M and gets a new #1 RD, as their only currently signed righty is Rutta. Tampa's window is closing fast with Point expecting to take every penny of cap space they have, and Vassy & Sergachev both up for new contracts after this season.

oh, idk. I know that's a fair deal, but I like having GOOD players on defense for a change. Vatanen is a good #3 dman on any team and can manage to be a #2 on some. I'm ok with keeping him. Long, long ago, in a faraway land.. we used to have a top 4 of Stevens-Rafalski, White-Niedermayer. I know he's a UFA after this year, but at just 32y/o.. would it be the worst thing to keep Vats and let Greene go instead??

but then again.. long-term.. it may be better to have that top 10 draft pick from Vancouver.

Nico I think will get 8 years, between $8 and $8.5 - it will be a deal that at the time will seem like an overpay but by the end of it will seem like a great deal.

Especially now that Hughes is in the picture as the long-term point-producing 1C, Nico will thrive as a Bergeron-esque player, putting up 50-70 points most years while playing fantastic defensively.

Where do you think that puts Nico? His numbers certainly has not been as great as his play. I see a future Bergeron when I watch nico. His extension will likely be a mix of that he has done, plus his potential. I am guessing something in the neighborhood of 8 years @ 7M AAV

He’s on LTIR so they don’t need to bother moving him

Forwards: Brandon Baddock (who dat?) and Pavel Zacha; Defensemen: Will Butcher, Connor Carrick, Josh Jacobs and Mirco Mueller.

The club did not tender a qualifying offer to the following three players:

Goaltender: Cam Johnson; Defenseman: Ryan Murphy; Forward: Stefan Noesen

I'm ok with this. I wonder what the offers are, especially for Butcher and Zacha. I feel like Todd is typing a blog at this very moment about it lol.

I liked Noesen but with Bastian and Hayden on the team there is no real reason to sign him.

Glad to see Carrick. I didn’t think there was a chance they wouldn’t keep Mueller.

Noesen isn’t necessarily gone. They just may not have wanted to be the required increase with a qualifying offer. He could always get offered a similar contract to the one he’s on now, they did something similar with Beau Bennett a few years ago.

What the offers are? Qualifying offers aren’t a lot, I think it’s just the salary from last season plus a certain percentage.

Good point.

BTW - 86 is a horrible jersey number. To 86 something means to throw it out.... Old time slang but still an odd choice. At least it's not 69...

I think it's required 10% increase. If the player elects arbitration then obviously the arbiter decides based on which side made the better case.

Absolutely Greene can go!!!! I just don't think we would land anything decent in return. Vats is still a great D, but we are blessed with a log-jammed RD. Let's see what he can fetch us, rather than having him under-utilized on our 3rd pairing. We should be aiming to have our top 4 D carry 48 minutes a night minimum. If smith is up for the task, that would give us a very talented D-core. The third pairing of Greene and Carrick (assuming Vats is traded), would be a competent 3rd pairing with 12 minutes a night. Greene is a smart player, but just can't sustain big minutes at this point in his career.

Can everyone stop floating the idea Shero is going to get rid of Greene? Teams don’t cut their captains who are a year from retirement! It’s not a thing! The message that move would send to potential veteran FA’s is horrible. I’m happy none of you have a say in running a team.
