Number 20 and a defensemen is all it took huh? - willschulme
I kind of figured they were looking for a first round pick if they couldn't get the 2C or the D replacement. Pionk seems like a depth guy.
The Jets could pick up a really good player with that #20 like Cam York or Raphael Lavoie. Maybe they could have gotten a little more, though. Of course, it depends on what kind of player Trouba is going to be for the Rangers. |

Meier has to be one of the last players SJ wants to lose, for the exact reason of him being young and up-and-coming. - MartysBetter88
Of course he is, but if they can't match tough, and if they do offer sheet Laine. The one tool Shero has is salary cap. Use it. The free agents are not coming here, the RFAs that can cash in might. |

Meier's a good one to target because SJ is cap crunched and the Devils won't sacrifice 4 firsts to get him, but maybe a first, second, and third.
Laine would cost 2 firsts, a 2nd, and a 3rd, and he's a bit of a shiftier target, because he really didn't do as well as expected this year. He's wildly inconsistent. More than half of all his goals came in November alone, and one sixth of them came in one game against St Louis. Plus, the Jets can match now anyway: their cap situation is softened with that trade.
Meier, however, is an intense player - he'll be good regular season or playoffs. |

A first a second and a third is too much. These compensation deals for rfas are (frank)ing nuts |

That was Winnipegs 1st they traded back to them in the Kevin Hayes trade.
Jets got Pionk and the Flyers 5th round pick.
Rags got Trouba and Brendan Lemieux when all is said and done.
These are Pete Chiarelli results in Winnipeg. |

hard to believe that the best they could do was get nothing when Trouba was just worth Taylor Hall straight up just a couple of days ago. |

I believe it was actually Hall+
Adam Larsson netted NJ a Hart trophy winner, Erik Karlsson netted Ottawa two firsts now that he re-signed and a possible 3rd 1st if the Sharks make the finals next year.
Trouba netted Pionk. Amazing asset management going on in Winnipeg. |

Wonder if the Trouba trade brings the Subban rumors back into play? |
|
|
|
This deal wouldn't happen as it not nearly enough from NJ for those three players. Also it does not improve the Jets as they can get much better deals trading them individually. Plus Hall will want more money to resign then the Jets have cap space for. - islansjet
So....umm....if Trouba is worth Pionk and #20 OA, what are the other two players worth? |

Hall isn't even that good. He is going to be two seasons removed from winning league mvp. Trouba has won all awards and led the league in all relevant stat categories since joining the league. Clearly he is worth all of a team's good players. |

This trade would be so much easier to laugh about if it wasn't the Rags that made out like bandits. |

Gorton has been killing it since becoming GM. It's scary to think that somebody competent is actually running that team for once. |

I have to think the Rangers are likely to get this done since they are sitting with Winnipeg's first rounder they got for Kevin Hayes and have a lot of other assets they could trade. They aren't in quite as good a cap situation as NJ but this is the type of move they'd likely go balls to the wall on. - Queenie_5_hole
Ha ha. Didn’t cost quite that much. |

They could get a really good player, they could also get a career 3rd liner, or a player that never sees the NHL. This is a really bad deal for Winnipeg no matter how you look at it. |

I don't think its that outrageous for Meier, he's a young 30 goal scorer. But if we are giving up a future first (especially one we can't lottery protect) I think it needs to be for a D. |

That’s what I’m getting at, even if it’s a 10-16 pick I don’t like it. He’s a hell of a player but there’s no guarantee we don’t suck again. |

It's a "bad deal" but IMO, if you get someone with similar ceiling in the end, you live with it, though you don't have to like it... like buying a bond and waiting the amount of time required to get anything out of it. He also might have pulled the trigger quickly in order to make a strong pitch for Tyler Myers before he hears the siren's call of free agency, which means he could have waited for more, but the clock was ticking on Myers, so he couldn't afford to wait. If the Jets retain Myers, you might say that the trade was for their first back and him.
I'll be keeping an eye on whom they're picking, though. I actually think the talent is pretty good at that part of the draft. |
