Great blog Trevor. Totally on board with most suggestions. I do think Gibbons did weirdly well in those final games to warrant a 1 yr - and he's not exactly a fossil, nor expensive. I might, though, be the only one here who thinks Pageau is exceedingly mediocre and has been way overpaid on this last contract, a la Zack Smith and Mike Condon, Alex Burrowes. PD has a nasty habit of rewarding pretty crappy play with big contracts with too much term. This team basically appears to have stocked up on what they 'think' are 2-3 Cs; Tierney, Norris, Brown, White (these are all legit 2-3s). Pageau is a fringe 3, and since the cup run has basically put up OK 4th line numbers while splitting 2-3 time, IE real bad, even if he's hometown; any other NHL team and he'd probably be a legitimate waiver drop (see: Borocop). If this is a rebuild, axe Pageau and Tierney and run White-Brown-Norris-Gibbons/Spezza (somebody added), and aim to draft a legit top line C prospect sometime stat, because I don't think this team has a 1C in the pipeline. |
