What's going on in Toronto? Marleau wants a trade then Zaitzev wants out. The Leafs had better add a good piece with Marleau for the Sharks to take him off the cap strapped Leafs.

I think Marleau is doing this for his family, and for his pal Mitch Marner. Possibly for Jake Gardiner who is also very well liked. All of these people get something out of Marleau doing a farewell tour of the Pacific coast. Marleau is still a useful player on the third line and PP, he just isn't worth $6.2 M for the next year. I bet wherever he goes, he'll add a year to the contract for a low value. Maybe $1.5 M to end his career in California 2 seasons from now.

Pretty sure that Zaitsev has had enough of being used as a shutdown dman. Talk of Rosen and Sandin passing him on the depth chart must not sound good. Gardiner leaving would be another hit to Zaitsev after Ozhiganov was returned to the KHL. Babcock has tried to convert his game to one where he blocks a lot of shots, plays a lot of hard minutes on the PK, and he knows that on another team, he may get better stats and less injuries. No doubt he wants to prove that he can be a top pair dman, rather than the scapegoat for a few vocal Leaf fans too.

Marleau is an over 35 contract so there is no benefit to anyone buying him out. His full $6.25mm contract counts against the cap wherever he goes, unless you are going to pull an Edmonton/Rangers who buried Sheldon Souray in the AHL to avoid his salary counting against the cap yers ago. I don't see that happening since Patty has a NMC.
Arizona has the space to afford him; more so than LA does. Doug was wise not to offer the 3rd year to begin with and he doesn't have dementia yet so Patty won't be here on the current deal.

I believe only just over a million comes off the cap hit for sending players to the minors. The rest would still count against the cap. Plus his NMC would stop it too.

Agreed, I can't see anybody trading for him with that number but I can see and that's if Toronto willing to attach something with Marleau (decent pick/player/prospect), a third team could get involved who has cap space, keeps the asset and then buys Marleau out so he can go back to San Jose. Marleau has to approve the trade so he's not going anywhere he doesn't want to go and my feeling is if San Jose will take him back at a lower price he'll be back there is a New York second.

Marleau made his decision for more money, a boost to his HOF chances, and Winning (how did that work out).

Next time he is in teal is for when they raise his 12 number to the rafters. Never as a player even at the minimum.

LA actually has plenty of cap space. The main difference between a trade with LA and a trade with Arizona is that the Kings would be looking to swap a longer-term lower-cap hit contract (Phaneuf, Carter, Kovalchuk w/ retention), while Arizona would be looking to take on his entire contract in exchange for a blue-chip prospect or a 1st round pick. It all depends on whether Dubas wants the full cap relief and is willing to give up a quality asset, or if he wants to clear up a few million without having to give up significant value in return.

Too bad, he's well liked in Toronto.

The Zaitsev thing is down to a change in position that switched from offensive to defensive, and not agreeing with the coaching. Fair enough.

Marleau being traded is just because of cap money, nothing else. He's very well liked here. Only way Toronto packages anything with him is if no money comes back in the trade, otherwise there's no point. He's still good for 50 points in the season, and he's in his last contract year.

That's fantastic news for the Leafs. The 2 worst contracts. Huge break.
Meanwhile, Jets have 2 young core pieces that want out (Laine and Trouba)

Well I wouldn't call it a break just yet. Let's see what the Leafs have to give up to get rid of those horrible contracts first.

So true. Wouldn't it be hilarious if The Kings sent back Phanouf in the Marleau deal.
After, Phanouf was basically ran outta town, I would crack up if that happened!!

In case you missed it, he asked to be moved to anywhere on the west coast, for family reasons. So no, he's not being traded just because of cap money.

I honestly think the Leafs kind of asked him to ask for a trade... I knew the minute they signed this contract it would be a problem in year 3. And I knew Lou offered it because he wouldn't be around for year 3. Zaitsev contract was alright, just too much term, for a guy coming off his first season.

The more I've thought about it, the more I'm thinking the Ducks should trade for him. Kesler will be put on LTIR, so the cap hits are negligible. Ducks could use a C, and he and Getzlaf could mentor the kids coming up. It's for one year. The Ducks aren't winning the Cup anyway, and if they can get a pick/prospect out of it, why not?

I dont see Marleau wanting out. Look he is the one that wanted a 3 year deal, he signed a 3 year deal knowing he'd be away from his family. Leafs are his best chance at a cup in what I believe to be his final year in the NHL. Leafs are his best shot. Especially considering Jones is signed long term and Pavelski and Karlsson could be on their way out.
