Ben Shelley: Brock Nelson Contract Comparables - Ben Shelley
Honestly, he'll be fine for the first two years of the deal & then by year 3 most posts will be trying to figure out how to move the contract to get younger & better. Trend is the young guys & after their ELC's are getting the lion share of the players revenue sharing $$$. These 28-29 year olds are getting squeezed down the pay scale as they become UFA's. GM's will need to adapt quick to this rapidly changing landscape, which is why I think this is too much money & term. |

how does Brock compare to these players defensively?
aside from turris i feel these comparable all bring more on the defensive side of the puck. |

Nice work Ben. Agree with the above post in that an overall look (not just offensive output) would add more value to an already good blog |

Thanks very much!
Yep fair enough, I do think offensive production would be the lead category in finding comparables/assessing player value for forwards but agreed that looking at defensive reliability, role in special teams, etc. would be a good future add-on for blogs like this. |

If Nelson is a 50-60 pt a year player the first 3 or 4 years of the contract its a win for the Islanders. Need to add more to the top 6 even if we sign Lee to be a cup contender next year. Let Eberle go and trade for or sign a sniper for Barzal . Let Whalstrom,Bellows , Ho- sang and Del colle fight it out for spot. |

Best comparable for Nelson is Schmaltz, who is younger and cheaper. Lou is the worst GM in the NHL - Tanner |

Never really cared about contracts since I do not pay the money. Just want the most competitive team possible and there was no one better at his position to go after as a upgrade for the same money. I also like the fact that the player loves the team and the area he lives. This deal had to get done. The team has money to go after top tier talent so its all good. |
