When he's healthy, I love having him in the lineup.

Like the player. Love the contract. Jake is a left-hand version of what Bogo is supposed to be, but smarter and cheaper.

Over the last two years, he's shown extended periods of above average offense (primary point production) and pretty good defense (3rd highest d-zone%, lowest 0-zone of d-men this year).

If they can add some defensively capable d-men and give mccabe a more balanced deployment I think he can be great value moving forward. There's some risk involved but if the cap number is low enough its worth taking.

those injuries over the past two seasons could very well help keep his $$$ and term low enough...I thought $1.6M over two seasons was a bargain...despite his injury woes lately, would like to see him in the fold for a few more years, maybe at $2.25 per?

"If he can stay on the ice, is he worthy of a letter?"

Former captain of Team USA. If Risto is moved, I could definitely see him getting the A.

Lock him up for 4 years - the better part of his prime. Does $3m per get it done?

I like McCabe good enough. Lock him up to a reasonable, low multiyear contract and hope his health holds out.

Could very well be, that's why it's an interesting contract decision. Doesn't seem like much now, but has the potential to be quite the steal.

But Im curious to see if his value in a trade exceeds his value to the team? Tough/physical, says the right things etc. . Maybe not on his own but if he's that extra piece a team wants in a much bigger deal..

I think 2019 is: McCabe+Nylander+20 something

I'm not asking for actual trade targets necessarily, but what caliber of player do you think that gets you?

I think either a high risk/high reward top6 fwd/#3D or a sure fire #7fwd/#4D

You'd essentially be looking at another Montour esque deal but...better/riskier?

with bogo, risto, mccabe, scandella

this d core has sucked for many years

add dahlin and montour and it still sucks

yeah mccabe was hurt before montour got here, but reality is it's a losing culture and with our depth for LD I think mccabe is the guy to move

offer him and the late first round pick and see what you can get

the only bargain in our own end is dahlin on a rookie deal IMO

and that comes to an end in 24 months

Dahlin-???
McCabe-Montour
Pilut-Bogo
Scandella
Hunwick

Risto for a forward or 2, the late first for Dahlin's partner, sign a couple of people, and see if you can get someone to bite on a package of leftovers (Nylander, d prospects, some of next year's picks) for another forward.

the only thing you are getting for that is Luke Adam.. you would probably be better off just running with Alexander in the lineup

Nylander and next year's 2nd could land a decent asset from a cap crunch team. High upside, low floor. Add a Larry or Gus and they're getting at least an NHL player

I know it's unlikely, but would a trade of Nylander for either Johnsson or Kapanen from Toronto work? Who would say no? Leafs don't really have money to resign these guys and having Willie there might be an incentive. Plus, Alex is pretty cheap for two more years. Buffalo would get a player further along in their development that could help right away. Heck, add McCabe and trade for both.

Why would anyone want either nylander?

Especially Toronto. I'm pretty sure they are nylandered out
