Agreed. While the lottery makes it impossible to guarantee a top 3 pick, moving down (up?) 1 spot guarantees a top 5 pick for them. I remember in the 2015 draft when there was a general consensus of who the top 5 picks would be that year. The Devils unfortunately had the 6th pick, and I remember that different mock drafts had 10-15 names being thrown around for this pick. In this situation, the 6th pick had literally no increased value when compared to the 20th pick. Consider this: the Devils ended up picking Zacha, and while he is an NHL regular, he doesn't hold anywhere near the value of Matthew Barzal, Zach Werenski, or Mikko Rantanen, all picked a few picks after him.
While you can't guarantee a top 3 pick, dropping to 30th could make a huge difference. |

Going into that draft it was assured that McDavid, Eichel, Marner and Strome would be picked before the Devils picked. That meant one of Hanifin or Provorov would be available. The Devils picked poorly, cant blame that on losing a lotto. I remember on all the hockey boards the fan consensus was Provorov with some wanting Barzal. Conte poop the bed on that one. I have a bit more faith that even if we fall to 6 this year we will wind up in better shape, hopefully Byram is around still, though I doubt it. |

You must be happy seeing the Wings win 7 of 8 down the stretch. Morons. |

I'm on board! I will certainly not complain if we get top 3 and walk away with Hughes/Kakko/Podkolzin, they seem the like the consensus top 3 and a step above everybody else, so it'd be nice to walk away with a "sure-fire" guy. After the top 3 it seems all over the place, specifically picks 4-11ish seem to all be interchangeable |

While most teams that are out of it continue to play to win, honorably, this team is embracing the tank. Bad karma. The hockey gods will punish this. |

Good write up Todd and I am in full agreement. Let's just hope the players and management are thinking similarly. |

What I find odd is that as bad as the Devs goaltending tandem has been this season, they have only given up 9 more goals this year than the Rangers tandem in one more game played. I guess Hank is officially on the decline which is good for us

Is it still up in the air which is the better player between Hughes and Kakko? I haven't looked into it in a few months. |

Seems like its still Hughes, although Kakko has closed the gap a bit. They have the U18s coming up soon, maybe even the world championship afterwards too, so things could still change. If they both play in the U18s that'll be a big showing for each, thats how Heiskanen and Kotkaniemi jumped up in their respective drafts, i think Kakko would need to outperform Hughes by a decent margin to jump him on draft day though |

Really a 1A or 1B situation. Either would help us tremendously. We have a hole at 2C that Hughes would fit in nicely behind Nico, or the potential of a Hall-Nico-Kakko line. I don't see the downside either of those situations. If we pick 3 I'd be very tempted to take Byram. |

Yeah...I still remember how those "hockey gods" punished the Penguins for tanking in '83-'84 with those early 90's Stanley Cups. |

Mess didn't guarantee poop. He said "we will win tonight", which is what the (frank) anyone on either team should say when asked. Guy was a great hockey player and a great leader; and he played on hell of a game 6 against us; but this guarantee story is a case of FAKE NEWS becoming folklore. |

Got any tape or quote of Mess saying he guaranteed poop? What the (frank) is that, the post?
Joe Namath said "We are going to win the game. I guarantee it". See that second part with the guarantee? Slight difference. And by slight I mean completely (frank)ing different.
