I'm taking the zen approach here.

It's only a 1 year deal, Howard might not be as washed up as he looked a few years ago (although he's still average at best), and the Wings have absolutely no one in the system ready for more than journeyman work anytime soon.

The only real complaint I have is the opportunity cost. Signing Howard now basically rules out the possibility (however remote it might have been) that the Wings might have been able to acquire a better goaltender in the offseason.

In other words they've basically decided to lock in mediocrity in goal now and remove all doubt. Which ... meh.

I would rather go status quo in net than end up overspending on Bob. What other options are there really?
