Most likely. It's a brilliant play by him and his agents.

Not a bad deal.....as a leaf fan I would have hoped that for basically 12 mil you could have locked him up for 8.....but could have been worse.

Now you have to hope you can get Marner signed for less than 10 or you guys will be in cap hell

Cap hell is when you actually pay good players the money they are worth so you can keep them and hopefully win games.

Solid deflection.

I’m well aware of the tire fire in Ottawa, doesn’t change the fact that there is still serious cap issues looming in Toronto.

Or it is paying guys before they have won anything.

Nothing Leaf's could do, Eichel and McDavid set the market.
If the Leafs were going to do what amounts to 12, I think would have wanted 8 years, but its sounds like Matthews camp was not willing.

This is so silly. Winning the Calder trophy doesn't count? It's a fact that he's a top 5 player in the game and should be paid accordingly.

Kane and Toews made $6mil on their 2nd NHL Contracts and won 2 Cups on those deals. They have won nothing since the dual $10.5mil cap hits went into effect and the Leafs are about to have THREE $10mil ++ players once Marner gets his own $11mil deal......the Bob Mackenzie Fanboy projection with Kapanen at $2.75mil is laughable. ANYBODY would offer sheet Kapanen at $4mil to only give up a 2nd round pick in compensation with what he's shown this year. Kapanen > Nylander

With Gardiner and Hainsey coming off the books Leafs should have about $18M in cap space to sign Marner, Kappi, and Johnsson. They will rotate a mix of Ozi/Rosen/Holl/Liljigren to replace JG. They also have the option of leveraging the LTIR on the Nathan Horton contract for one more year so they can actually go over $18M for next season. Marleau's contract comes off the books in 2020. that's $6.25M plus whatever amount the cap goes up by. I think they'll be just fine. The doom and gloom is coming from leafs haters in IMO mostly because they don't know anything about the leafs but like to pretend like they do.

Why? because if you pay guys before you build depth you inhibit your chance to win the cup, I don't think you can win the cup with 3 guys taking up what could be 33 million in cap hit over the next 3 or 4 year

We shall see.

That's because Chicago's management team is inept at building a good team around those two. Same with Edmonton and McDavid. Not all management teams are as clueless.

Why is Kapanen going to score less in his "breakout" season than Nylander has ever in a full season/

The problem is Toews isn't good enough to earn the NHL's top salary. Matthews is.

No argument on that point. But the main point is that team depth wins Stanley Cups, not having 4 really good players and a bunch of scrubs.

I assume Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Rielly are the really good players and the scrubs are Marleau, Nylander, Kadri, Andersen, Muzzin, Kapanen, Johnsson, Dermott, Gardiner, Hyman, Brown and the rest?

I wish Hockeybuzz forced people.to actually do some research before they posted. Read BobbyMac.....Friedman's 31 Thoughts...listen to the interviews with those actually involved in the process (in this case, Dubas and Matthews)...before posting.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but to try and state one's opinion as fact, when it is the complete opposite of what every person with first-hand knowledge of the situation has said, is just lunacy.

My opinion....not the best of deals for the Leafs, but not the End of Days either. The best news is there was no acrimony in the talks....the Matthews camp wanted the max term since he loves playing and living in Toronto....and the number allows the Leafs to make a strong push for the Cup for the next 6 years.
