Florida won this trade.

I won't judge this trade from FLA's standpoint until they flip Brassard. I feel like they got less quality than they gave.

2nd round pick? Ok, that's solid.

Two 4th? Meh.

Sheahan? Meh.

Brass? Remains to be seen.

Dumping the salary and the 2nd seems to be the biggest plus for FLA while the Pens upgrade over Sheahan and at the very least made a lateral move in Bjugstad.

McCann plays on the PK. Good to see. Replaces some of the time Hags and Shea both spent on that unit before they were shipped off.

If it sets them up to get Panarin plus Tippett, Denisenko, and Heponiemi are ready to go next year they would have possibly the deepest forward group in the league.

Yohe put up an article in the athletic about the trade. If anyone who subscribes would be kind enough to give some tidbits it would be appreciated.

Yup. This is why I'm waiting to judge this trade from FLA's standpoint.

It kind of reminds me of the Kessel trade in that comparing what the two teams are trying to do in the trade is apples and oranges. Bjugstad isn't that good. McCann might be a bust. Clear out salary while acquiring an asset you know the team that currently has Panarin values. If you can't swing for Panarin directly, you now have the cap space to make an offer during free agency and you can flip Brassard to the Peg or Vegas or some other unnamed team that has interest in him for probably a second.

I think the trade works out for them even if Bjugstad comes in and kills it for us.

Here's a Ruth quote...

“I really like this draft coming up,” Rutherford said. “Really, really like it. Now, it will be tempting to trade that pick before Feb. 25, because someone is going to make an offer. Someone will offer something that I hadn’t thought of, and it will be interesting. Anything is possible, to be honest. I’m always looking to make us better. But I tell myself before I go to bed every night that I shouldn’t trade our first-round pick this season.”

Ok let's dive into it.

Bjugstad will start at 3C, but Rutherford thinks McCann projects as a 3C moving forward. He gushed over him being a shut down guy and advanced defensively for his age. I was under the impression McCann sucked defensively, so I guess we'll see about that. Rutherford's direct quote:

“This is a shutdown player,” Rutherford said. “You put him on a third line, in that kind of role, he can shut down other players. That’s what he does best. But he can score, too. He can really skate. He’s such a good puck-pressure guy. And the thing about him is, he’s so young. There’s a ton of upside there, in our opinion. We’ve liked him for a long time.”

So even if McCann is playing wing, Rutherford thinks he's a third line guy. He didn't bring him in here to just give the fourth line a kick. He's super high on him.

On Bjugstad he basically said he's the quintessential 3C. Strong on defense but loves to shoot and can score. Says he's not sure if him and Phil will work together but that Sullivan now has a lot of flexibility given that both Bjugstad and McCann are C/W hybrids.

My analysis from the quotes are that Bjugstad was brought in to fill what we need now but that McCann is really the player they're excited about. Sounds like Rutherford really wants Sullivan to groom him to be the 3C moving forward.

As for the players going the other way, sounds like Rutherford traded Brassard in his mind months ago. Said they knew for a while they had to make the change at 3C. Think we all knew this to a certain point. As for Sheahan, he said hes a good player but was going to be a UFA and we just brought in non-UFAs, so it had to be done. In other words its just good asset management.

I think there's too many players out there that start declining at 28 to say a player's prime is past that 26 year old bench mark. Its a pretty good bet that players will be at their most productive between 24 and 27.

Thanks!

Interesting. I mean, the guy is only 22, so he could develop more, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

You can do worse than hanging your hat on solid even strength point production on a dumpster fire team when it comes to betting on a buy low candidate. But at 22, he's close to what he's gonna be moving forward. I think if he comes in and kills it for us, it'll be a Schultz type deal where he actually was already good and just in a bad situation rather than taking a lot of strides in his game in a short amount of time.

It sounds like JR is selling this guy like a young Hags......with more offensive potential.

Bjugstad's size and shot would likely pair really well with Malkin.

Honestly, 3C means nothing if Malkin continues to be ineffective 5 on 5.
