As long as it's not Leafs Pajamas.

This type of deal may be more conducive to being made next summer, since Zaitsev has a $3 Million signing bonus due to him on July 1. He could potentially be moved by the Leafs to create cap room to re-sign Gardiner before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer or to open up space to extend or make room for the salary of a blueliner that Dubas hopes to acquire.

Trading Zaitsev to re-sign Gardiner would probably be a better July 1st than last year.

As much as I don't like Gardiner—and trust me, I don't—it's going to be a tall task making this D better next year than this year.
And if you think about how sub-par this D-group is now, you'd think that wouldn't be hard.
But I mean.. Hainsey, Gardiner and Z if we pawn him off; That's 3 D we need to replace with not a lot of money or prospects to do it.

I have a hard time seeing that happen.
Whether fans would like to see it or not, it makes more sense to try and find a way of improving the D without parting ways with our Willy. At least hypothetically.
There are a lot of factors going into the next couple year:
Expansion draft, Marleau coming off the books as two examples.

Trade him for a RHD already.
