Its a rainy day sunny California. So think its time to think a little about our current state of Ducks Hockey. And not just the bad parts either. Maybe some good and strange.

Let's start with the obvious. The duckies are currently 12-10-5 in 29 games this year. Not bad considering the amount of injuries players have been having. I could mention that now we are tied for first. But that's more of an indictment of the Pacific division than anything else. Truly 2 games above .500 does not make us a playoff team.

So if our standings don't really matter as a good measuring stick what can we use. Some would say advance stats. Such as corsi. And of course those stats are horrible. So horrible that we rank near the bottom in every category except goaltending. But can good goaltending buy itself make it anywhere near good to be a playoff team. I mean goalies don't score goals. They stop them. So some offense is required to make this team win. But the stats don't bear that out. Routinely being out shot 10 or 15 more times a game is suppose to lose you more games than win. So something doesn't add up here either.

Now to the older test. The eye test. Looking at this team you see older veterans with unproven rookies tring to make a system that is not suited to there style of play work. You see a coach who in his 3rd year of his contract try to make adjustments to a system that he's never taught before. All while juggling a line up of players who have been injury prone. Some days they skate well and lose. Other days they play bad and win. Random is the word to use. So the eye test fails too.
So all in all, record says they are above average. Stats say they are really bad. And the eye test says WTF.

So what do we trust as ducks fans. I mean measurements are our only way to make real judgments about what this team is and what to do about it. Do we cheer as we obviously are way over achieving. Do we boo as obviously this is just really luck and eventually all this is going to come crashing down. Do we sit in amazement as other teams try to make the playoffs only to watch our duckies stumble in.

As a ducks fan I've never seen a stranger season. But really all that matters after 27 games is the other 55 games. Because if you even think you know what's going on with the ducks right now. I guarantee you they'll do something different tommorow. And like "Captain America here" you'll have no clue what's going on.

Why is this this strangest season? What makes it strange? They are missing a couple key players and they are a middle of the pack team because of it. Doesn't seem too strange to me.

Because they shouldn't be doing this well. It's one thing to play bad and lose. It's another to play horribly bad and still be winning. Ducks Twitter has full of nay says predicting doom and gloom. But it hasn't happened

Just keep your faith, everything has a reason. Enjoy the ride and let the NHL season take you in whatever direction it’s meant to.
