It’s an afternoon game...I wish I could say they come out blazing, but that just doesn’t seem likely |

I seems like the Flyers always struggle in afternoon games. Not sure what it takes to see some desperation and urgency. |

Their best two 60-min efforts so far -- the 1-0 loss to Vegas and last Saturday's win over NJ -- have been in afternoon games. They also did pretty well in weekend matinees last year, too. But when they have a clunker in such games, they tend to REALLY have a clunker and those stand out in memory. |

Islanders scare me more than Boston for some reason, their speed and work ethic. Something the Flyers haven't had.
So this could go 2 ways:
1) Neuvirth plays great and the team wins, puts hope in Flyer fans for a turn around then crushes them when inevitably gets hurt again.
2) Neurvith looks like everyone else because the team in front. |

Remember when Ryan White stood up to Matt Martin and broke his face? That was awesome. Unfortunately, that won’t be happening tonight. Isles 4th line will run wild. |

If this game starts to look ugly in any fashion, I have no doubt the fire Hak chants will kick in.
You can feel and hear it from the majority of the fan base that patience is running thin. |

so what is the real problem with this team? is it the core? the support players? the defense? the goaltending? the coaching? I mean, not just this year, but over the last 5 years or so |

All of the above with the core being the least of it. |

Lack of depth.
When the top players aren't playing at the top of their game this team can't win and alot of times it gets down right ugly.

Lindblom
Vorobyev
All 3 of them have been playing below expectations.
JVR being injured since game 2is big lose.
Then the 4th line is just a black hole that is expected to do nothing but play defense.
You add all of this up and you have a fantastic recipe for a crappy product.

The 4th line in my opinion has done a nice job this season to this point. |

A little bit of all which makes it the most frustrating.
A team can win with a productive core and holes in other areas (see Flyers last year, not a good season, but enough to make playoffs), but the other way around brings terrible results. |

Depth is good for support, not carry load when top players disappear. |

For the most part, yes.
My point was they aren't going to contribute offensively. |

The best teams can still win games when their top players are shut down. For example when the Flyers play Boston in Boston and the Couturier line is going to see Bergeron and Chara all night long, chances are you're going to need some other lines contributing to win.
By the way, a lack of a veteran checking center is having an effect on the Couturier line in my opinion. |
