this is why Corsi is crap

if those shots didn't go in for Dallas last night, they would have had more possession time and more shots on goal

nothing gives up possession like scoring a goal

I think sometimes, James, you get caught up in the thing you are using to predict (e.g., corsi, advanced stats --- definitely not faceoffs --- and lose sight of the thing you're trying to predict; goals maybe, but most certainly wins. And the person above mentioning goals stop possession is correct ^^ I'm not saying Arizona played poorly -- I have no idea. But the whole point of using corsi is to try and evaluate players to put together a good team... to win.

Also Strome is a bust -- you heard it first here.. a year ago.

The Coyotes get shut out. Surprise, surprise. I do agree that a participation badge is in order. I mean the league has bailed out this blackhole of a hockey team since it's inception, so why not, right?

Looks like poor goaltending from Arizona was a major contributor?

Look if you want to just assume the team that wins is the best, go right ahead. It's not 2006 anymore and I don't have to defend analyzing a game the right way. I'm sure you wish there was more fights and are sad that defensive defenseman are irrelevant. There's nothing I can do about that though.

Not completely irrelevant... Gudbranson busted Hamonic's face. 2 defensive defencemen being relevant having a fight.

All summer long, Tanner writes Coyotes-related blogs the the Washington blogger, and now that the season has started with some good Caps' storyline (a suspension, a blowout win, and a shootout loss), the Caps blog is nowhere to be found.

Just amazing.

I don't really see what you're complaining about here? I asked to be switched back to the Coyotes right after the SCF and haven't written about the Caps since then.

Are you going into every comments section on the site to complain that that team's writer isn't covering the Capitals, or just me?

I don't understand why you'd complain that I don't write about the team I stopped covering.

Not sure what you're getting at here. When a goal is scored, the puck is dropped at centre ice and there's a 50% chance the team that scored will get the puck back.

There are 100 odd shot attempts per game and maybe three goals (per team) this means that a goal is scored on roughly 3% of shot attempts. So if a team scores their possession numbers aren't being adversely affected considering that this doesn't happen 97% of the time.

No, because on this one you actually are listed as the Coyotes blogger, not the Caps one. It was puzzling why you continually wrote Coyotes-related blogs under the "Capitals blogger" title.

I just thought that, since you are still listed as the Capitals blogger, that we'd get your deep insight into the Wilson 2-game suspension, the 7-0 blowout, or the 7-6 shootout last night as opposed to a team that lost 3-0 last night.

Just my 2 cents, for what they're worth (3 Canadian cents?)

Edit: I didn't realize that "right after the SCF" means early August.

Actually, I'm pretty sick of the idea that everyone is biased and no one can report fairly. I ripped the Capitals all the time when I wrote about them. I used to rip the Coyotes daily when I thought they were poorly managed. I ripped them all the time last year when I thought they were being badly coached.

The idea that everyone has an agenda is making me sick. Stop being so cynical, it's disgusting. People can still be educated, informed and smart while disagreeing with another educated, informed and smart person.

Get off your phones and you'll realize this.

Odd, all of the other bloggers on here actually talk about the teams they're listed (and paid) to cover.

As a Leafs fan, James, I'm sure you're aware Tochett isn't the only coach guilty of playing his grinders too much. At least Komarov is gone now. God Babs seemed to love playing him.

yeah its a league wide thing, really. In hockey you've sort of always been expected to match lines and put your grinders against scorers. Stats are helping us learn that maybe this isn't always the best approach, but it takes time to bleed down into real world situations.

You're already seeing teams ice five or six puck moving defenseman - something I was routinely mocked for suggesting five years ago - and you're also seeing fourth lines made up of skilled players. I have no doubt that if Toccet's successful as an NHL coach that much like Babcock, he'll learn and adjust as he goes.
