I'm surprised they chose Gagner to make an example of, would of been much more palatable if it had been Schaller or Granlund to the hockey world.
I do think Gagner was a good candidate for a bounce back year, not 50 points but closer to his career avg. That said, I'm glad Benning stuck to his word about waiving a vet if a player forced spot. Hilarious that it was for Motte, I predict Motte is sent down by xmas.
Even more hilarious to see Booner bend over backwards to make sure everybody knows this is not a Benning mistake, THIS WAS ALWAYS THE PLAN !!

Thanks Carol, I am going to go with:
Last in the Pacific
Last in the Western Conference
30th overall
The Metro and Atlantic divisions have multiple contenders for the bottom 5, whereas I feel the Canucks are the clear front (or bottom) runners in the West, so I think there will be enough head-to-head series that will give multiple points to the NY teams, Ottawa, Montreal, and Detroit to have most of them finish ahead of the Canucks
EDIT: I will also add that, despite my pro-tank status, the preseason was definitely a concern for me. The record I felt reflected the team accurately, in that they weren't competitive, the prospects hardly pushed for spots, and the veterans did not show any signs of wanting newer and bigger opportunities. Overall it was an awful preseason with a lot of content-looking players |

it's hilarious that you think that waiving a player that you signed as your 6th highest paid forward (last year) after 1 year into a 3 year deal is all according to some master plan.
this isn't the biggest issue on this team but it's hilarious the extent to which some people will defend every single move this team makes. - RealityChecker
Again, I didnt claim that he signed him with the plan on waiving him this fall. Masterplan? You are lying. I have argued that he would have considered it a way out if the situation changed and it did... and he's waived. Hardly worthy of this narrative being floated through here that Benning never saw the situation changing with the emergence of his young players. Dumping him was open from the beginning I would have to imagine.
You know what I have on my side of the argument... Gagner was dumped in a heart beat... and Benning said he would do this... and he choose someone he replaced with new players both with UFA's and prospects.... and I'm sure you can expect the same with the 3 new vets that were added to the bottom 6... they will get dumped as well when the situation changes over the next few years... whether its next season or beyond.. my point all along is this was an option he recognized from the beginning. I did... so I'm he did. |

Mistake....bottom line. There is no other argument.
Assured, he was hoping for more from SG but it never materialized.
Mistake plain and simple, and at least he is quick to cut anchor this time and move on with the rebuild.... |

Doesn't mean it wasn't a mistake. In the summer of 2017 there was no Beagle, no Rousell, no Schaller and was counting on SG for the teams offence and signed him for 3 years to make sure he had him. It was upon realizing that he made a mistake that he changed course.
Sure, he dumped SG in a heartbeat, but it was a mistake to sign him for 3 to begin with. JB evidently knows this and made peace with it.
Mistake. Move on from this stupid argument. |

Pretty happy with the roster. Maybe some didn’t think of motte, Goldy and lipstick as going with the kids but I love it. It’s going to be a fun team to watch imo. I do think we’re last in a very tough pacific... bottom 5 as well but Detroit and Ottawa will be right there with us. Worse teams than this have bonded together to make success stories, but I think the full 82 games is going to wear this young team out. I just hope for some surprises in terms of scoring, there’s a few guys with potential for sure. |

I thought EP was the only one that was ever going to actually take a spot. The rest IMO weren't going to be ready for this season. I'd rather them overripe also. OJ and Dahlen were good but not NHL good in there leagues. |

People misrepresenting what I'm saying and even worse arguing with someone who is simply claiming that there were options considered and not much of a negative threat involved with the term. The "mistake" is greatly exaggerated. One year and off the roster for the time being.... not on the cap as far as I know. Wasting Fa's money... mistake for job security maybe.... |

I agree with the overripe stance, I really have no issues with them taking a smaller step forward this year but I suspected Gaudette would have been closer to a spot. I also thought a younger defenseman, like Sautner, would have been able to step into the 6-8 role but not the end of the world for me |

You are talking something much broader as the mistake. Those 3 UFA's are not because of the SG alone. Gagner is one player. Those 3 players don't play on the PP. Gagner didnt work on the PP as was hoped... time to move on. Moved on...
I think this discussion has evolved beyond the use of the word "mistake" anyways. At least you are not putting words in my mouth about some master plan... wow.. there are some really brain dead people in here.

and there it is folks... after, what feels like thousands of words, you acknowledge that it was a mistake that's being exaggerated.
no one thinks it's a big mistake. in fact, i said so explicitly. the reason why people (including me) bring up this "mistake" is to give benning credit for acknowledging and moving on from it. |

These guys on the roster do make me happy, but I think I am still a little hesitant to think they are locks for the season like Pettersson. I was hoping there would be more than one "no-doubt" kid break through this year, but excited regardless to have some more youth present regularly |

Pretty good day for us Canucks fans in here.
Could be interesting who gets waived upon Roussel's return.
Last in division
Last in Conference
Last in League(pick 3rd overall)
Anyone heard when the brawl to end them all is planned between Lefty and Booner? |

same old booner. ad hominen attacks in between conspiracy theories about narratives.
keep being you booner.
and this nonsense that benning didn't "paint himself into a corner" because he knew he could waive him is hilarious. here's a hint: you can do that with all players who don't have NMCs. |

Fair statement, however, JB had options and chose to waive SG effectively admitting that it wasnt working out.
He couldve easily just played SG but wasnt going to get the offense he was signed for.
I think that this has a 2-fold affect. It opens the door for one of the young guns to be called up first if there is an injury. I think if JB doesnt have faith in him now, then I suspect he has no faith in him going forward.
In fact, I am skeptical that SG plays another game in the NHL. |

lol you saying this is more about narratives, and my exertions that it wasn't a "mistake" made this whole thing into something way bigger than it needed to be. Like most "arguments" on hockeybuzz, it almost always centers around the two posters actually agreeing, but disagreeing on the fine details. Can we not just agree that today is a good day, Gagner being waived was good, and that the rest of us are actually giving credit to benning for it? and can we put this "false narratives" thing to rest. Its starting to sound like trump via "fake news" on here. |

Attacks? You never actually simply entered the argument with a opinion. You turned around what I said, pressed on and then start with this crap now. You simply are instigating a reason to get on your soap box. Where's the conspiracy by the way? You are making up all kinds of crap today. Monday got you blue?
So now that you turned it it ugly rather than the simple heated debate it was... whats your next move or did all you wanted out of it?

sucked ass last season so everyone already hated him and this whole team was bad this pre-season outside of like 3 or 4 players. |
