Rules are rules but just because someone makes it a rule doesnt mean it is right. There are thousands of rules that were changed throughout the history of the world because they werent right. You have too look at what the rule is, why it exists and how it has been broken.

The rule for band substances is there to keep players from using enhancements to gain an edge on their opponents. Did Nate do any of this? No, sure he had traces but nothing that would have been relevant. If the NHL went ahead and decided to increase the testing for the specific player, fine that is an acceptable percussion.

Rules cant be black and white because not every circumstance is. Everything has a grey area.

Not sure of what the substance was. But if it's a steroid of some sort to help him build more muscle then yes it is enhancing his performance as he will be stronger after using it. He will open the season being a stronger player hence a better player. That is called performance enhancing.

In my previous post about injury repair, the same could be said only I stress that it's during the muscle healing process that has to stop once the injury had been repaired.

Nothing wrong with 3 strikes law.

This should be appealed in some manner. Made subject to the next collective bargaining agree ment... Better testing and eliminating positives that are literally environmental contamination.

That would come down to what is considered acceptable & not acceptable. The arguement for or against the pain killers is that without them the player cannot play, with them he can so it is a blatant aid for a player to play better than he would be able to normally.

There is another example I have where I believe it should be ok. An injured player that can take steroids to get him playing again sooner. We had a case where a young player took a substance that helped recovery & had muscle healing qualities. The player had just had a shoulder reco & it was during the offseason. The product significantly helped his recovery so he could play the next season rather than sit half of it out. Once he had recovered, he stopped using the product. He was going into his final season on his contract & needed another contract.

He was a professional league player so being injured would have had dire effects on his earning potential. I believe as long as these players aren't using these drugs during season or pre season & ONLY for injury recovery that they should be allowed. Get them back on the field sooner so they can earn a living. Open it up for everyone & have the governing body oversee the treatments. 1 issue a lot of people had was the fact that steroids & peds are dangerous to a persons long term health. Well so is contact sport!

If it could be effectively documented and monitored, then yes, I agree... unless the substance in question would have long term negative health effects. I do not believe a short course of steroids would be harmful long term.

I agree with you here, I think Schmidt is allowed to and should say this is what I tested positive for and this how I got it in my system. I understand why the league is quiet about it, for the players privacy in case he is taking some type of medication or supplement for a personal problem. The biggest problem with things like this is that fans are completely uneducated and full of myths when it comes to the actual benefits of these substances. This leads to even worst stigmas.

Back when this policy was pretty new, José Theodore tested positive for something and addressed it head on. It was because of a hair growth treatment he was taking because his wonderous mane was thinning. Didn't he subsequently have it reversed?

Performance enhancers should be allowed anyway. Natural is so boring.

This is correct. There are people out there with conditions that require them to be on the stuff for life.

If there’s something in a product theres not supposed to be....then there’s a civil suit here apart from the nhl. The problem is not with the nhls rule. The nhl has done nothing wrong.

Based on what's been reported and what we know, or should I say I know based on this blog. I can't say the NHL did nothing wrong. Based n the information I have, I don't see sufficient enough evidence to tarnish a player and suspend him for 20 games and take away significant salary. Based on what's been reported we can't say Schmidt did anything wrong either.

How many more f'n years is Cooke going to be shoved down Pens fans' throats whenever this sort of topic is brought up? He's been out of the NHL for 3 years; hasn't been a Pen since 2012-13, and many Pens fans despised his shenanigans.

That is the thing though, that isnt the only usage for steroids. Many medicines out there can contain traces of steriods. Steroids is also a form of treatment used by doctors. Without any proof he should not be disciplined this severely for a small trace. Keep an eye on him if you have to but there isnt enough there to warrant any kind of suspension. Sure you have to be aware of what you are putting in your body but there is only so much you can do. I can tell you right now, there is probably a lot going in my body that I dont know about. Many things go by medical terms that we dont know about. No one is going to know 100% what goes in their bodies.

An independent arbitrator in the appeals process saw sufficient evidence to stay the 20 game decision. The comments in the blog only report one side of this issue.

Steroids and AAS (anabolic androgenic steroids) are not the same thing. Also PED's include a great deal of substances that don't even closely resemble steroids. Until it is revealed what he actually tested positive for, it could be anything from ephedrine to some good ole Latvian meldonium.
