Good signing if he doesn’t chase anyone out of the lineup.

The Kühnhackl roster spot seems to be taken now.

Hope Cullen shuts up the detractors once again.

All your star players are a year older and the roster as a whole is worse than last year.

Plan the parade.

The roster is only worse if Johnson is in the top 4. We didn't lose anyone besides Sheary, who at this point would have been a 4th liner on this team. When you're talking about 4th line production, I'm not sure how much more valuable Sheary is than Simon or ZAR in that capacity. Definitely is a better player, but when minutes are so limited you get diminishing returns. If Sprong pans out as a top 9 guy this season, we have a net gain at the forward position even after losing Sheary.

We lost Cole. Say what you want about him and Sully but he was very effective when he got a chance to play last season and we never replaced him

Sheary>Sprong no doubt

And JJ in any role is subtraction by addition

Sprong hasn't proven anything yet, but I definitely think he has the capacity to be better than Sheary next year. That's why my statement hinged on him panning out.

How much of a downgrade is Johnson from Chad R.? I think Ruhwhedel is undervalued and an average #6, but I could also see Johnson being an average #6 for us too. That's a really poor outcome for the contract he got, but from a purely on ice product standpoint, I'm not sure how much worse the bottom pairing, which was already bad last year, got if at all.

Last year game score wise

Ruhwedel 66th percentile. JJ 20th percentile.

All your star players are majorly rested this year and the roster as is a bit better because the bottom 6 will have slightly better players in it.

- Feds91Stammer

I actually like our forwards more this year than last. I don’t think another year on our core is a negative at this point, they’re still stars in this league. We’ll have some maturation from Sprong, ZAR, and maybe even Oleksiak which will be nice. Goaltending and d pairings are my concern. I have faith in Sprong

I tend to view everything in the context of the playoffs simply because the Penguins will undoubtedly be a playoff team. If a combination of ZAR and Sprong can somehow manage to score more than 2 goals in their next 34 playoff games, they'll be an improvement on Connor Sheary's last two playoffs.

Tom Kuhnhackl has 3 goals and 7 points in 47 playoff games (5 of those in the 2016 run and only 2 since). Carter Rowney has 3 assists in 23 playoff games.

These are the players that have left the roster. IMO that's a whole lot of addition by subtraction. Not to mention the utterly useless Matt Hunwick.

Jack Johnson needs to prove he's better than Hunwick before we can declare Hunwick addition by subtraction, because as bad as Hunwick was, he's probably better than anyone we have in WBS. Our organizational defensive depth is bad.

So far we've added:

#73 Jack Johnson
#7 Matt Cullen
#38 Derek Grant

Out of the door:

#43 Sheary
#22 Hunwick
#34 Kühnhackl
#37 Rowney

Coming from WBS:

#41 Sprong

I definitely think we are in a better shape now.
