Kovar sounds like someone they should absolutely be looking at considering Lehtera is currently slated as the 4C and you don't really know what you're going to get out of Laughton at 3C. Never hurts to add Center depth. And if he can produce for Keenan then he must be at least half decent.

Let's hope Kovar is not a repeat-ah of Jiri Dopita

This guy has some offensive pop. Sign him up for a sheltered 3rd line.

- DaveofYork

Except that Dopita wasn't actually all that bad. Played sound D, won a lot of faceoffs, and even his offense (11 goals, 27 points in 52 games) wasn't all that bad for someone in a 3rd line role behind Roenick and Primeau.

Dopita, who was called the Mark Messier of Europe, didn't show much intensity during his time with the Flyers except for when he was especially motivated (going head-to-head with countryman Bobby Holik, the night he scored 4 goals with family in the stands visiting from the Czech Republic, the night he returned from his opening night knee injury to score a goal and an assist, periodic other games). I think that's why people were disappointed. It felt like he had more to give than he produced on a typical night.

But in terms of his actual overall play, despite lacking wheels, he wasn't too bad for his middle-six role. If Kovar were to come in and produce at a shade over a 0.5 points-per-game pace in a third line role, it would be fine.

Nailed it Bill. Dopita got booed because he'd come out for a few shifts or very a rarely a full game and play like a top notch 1C. He'd then completely disappear for weeks and just look like a guy going through the motions who didn't give a damn.

He has to come in and show what Konecny did....then your right. That’s what camp is for...Hextall doesn’t like to put pressure on young players, but make no mistake, if a 19 year old is ready to contribute, they’ll find room.

It will be even more difficult for Frost than it was for Konecny due to his playing center. The Flyers expect their centers to play a complete 200 foot game and also want at least 3 of their centers to be able to match up well against the other teams top 2 pivots. All that being said, he does have a shot, but he's going to really have to excel at almost every facet of playing his position to win a spot this year.

Because of his height he sometimes looked like he was just coasting, or not giving his all. He was a highly skilled player. Playing behind two guys like Primeau and JR, he wasn’t used in an offensive role. I agree though, that I always felt there was more there.

Bill if the flyers go thevtrade route for a 3rd line center who in your opinion would be some names they may look at?

They are probably very concerned with projecting how he’ll hold up throughout the year. More physically demanding position and konecny has a stockier build than him. It is going to be a long shot

Yup it’s a long shot. Flyers might not even entertain him if he doesn’t come in with the right weight

I don't know if there really is a magic number. He's around 181, 182 now. So, if they want him at 185, but he's 182 and playing great and looks, by far, to be the best 3C option they have, you really think they send him back just because he didn't gain another 3 pounds?

Another year in Jr wouldn’t kill him....it’s not like he’s ever going to be that big...I mean Richards and Giroux were both scrawny...I liken Frost to Mitch Marner in TO. If he turns out like Marner then that draft pick may be one of the Flyers best of all time. Size wise and skill level, that’s who i think of.

I think he was unfairly billed as the best player not in the nhl and that drove up expectations.

I know it's kind of lame and probably not the most exciting of opinions, but I would be happy for Frost to stay in juniors this year just for future expansion draft purposes, that on top of the playing time and experience and strength he can build in that year is worth it to me. Then he can break onto the scene next yearike gangbusters
