Not sure about the fit anymore but there is still rumors circulating that Maroon could be destined to the flames. At this point if we could get him on a cheap 1 year deal does anyone pull the trigger? You would have to think if this was happening we would be buying out Brouwer.

I think hes always wanted to play for the Blues so if they cant free up cap space would he take a one year deal and try to circle back to them next year?

I don't expect anything to happen until we sign some of our RFA's.

For those wondering here are the links suggesting the fit and mentioning the rumors.

Between

Chucky
Bennett
Neal
Maroon
Smith

Makes for pretty scrappy group and definitely makes us harder to play against.

For the right price and contract length I could get on board with this

honestly, I think Maroon is going to get a multi-year deal worth at least $3.5-4 million per.

If you were Maroon, would you sign a cheap 1 year deal? Unlikely.

The Flames desperately need to shed salary to make sure they can keep Hanifin, Lindholm, Tkachuk, and Bennett long term. They're not going to be signing anyone else.

Should try and trade Sam Bennett while they are at it. Kid will never be an impact player in the NHL, would be better to try and trade him for another struggling prosect. Too bad EDM wouldnt trade with a rival, cause Jesse Puljujarvi would make for a good swap.

As perfect as it would be to get rid of Stone and Brouwer, it'll never happen. We've seen this same story time and time again, when the GM signs some below average veteran to an expensive deal with term because of their "leadership" etc. they never get taken out of the lineup. I mean Brouwer has an A for christ sake. He hasn't done poop in calgary and is frankly their worst forward now and they gave him an A right away. Backlund has been here his entire career, just captained his country to gold and he doesn't even have a letter. It's a joke

Look at Engallend for example, pretty much his whole time here everyone was calling for him to be taken out of the lineup, as he should've been but he never was. GM won't let their big signing sit in the press-box, it looks bad on them. Stone will be in the flames lineup until his contract runs out, and unfortunately it means Andersson will be stuck behind him.

It makes zero sense to trade Bennett, just like it makes zero sense to trade Jesse Puljujarvi. Players don't peak at 21.

Easy!

Call Montreal and ask them Pacioretty for Bennett and Valimaki. Then, Enjoy the year with 2 pure goal scorer (Pacio and Neal) and crush everyone with you new defense.

You're welcome!

I'd bet Bennett ends the year with more points than Pacioretty.

Players can absolutely peak at 21, they simply stop getting better either due to them hitting a ceiling or decline through age. Bennett would be the former. He has a high draft pedigree, and while as a fan you dont want to give up on him, the results after 3 seasons is telling. I dont think he will ever hit a 50pt season, so if you can sell high on him (if thats even possible), Calgary should do it.

I agree. Add bennett to a deal involving Brouwer or Stone to increase the potential return instead of a 5th round pick.

One of many examples.

That being said, I hope Yaks finds success in the KHL. Good kid, think he was mismanaged by EDM and never found his groove. Hopefully he can get himself on a top KHL line and get big minutes and turn his game around.

I agree. He maybe also shouldn't have been the top pick but oh well. Hindsight is what it is.

Can you believe Edmonton is still getting top picks after all these years without much to show for it?

Have you even watched Bennett play? He has so much potential. He just only shows up to play 20% of the games... Flames would not get much in return for him at this point, might as well see what he can do this year. Also, I don't really see him as a liability out there (defensively), just doesn't put the puck in the net (yet)...

Its EDM second round picks that really anger me, they had 4 31st overalls, and none of those players panned out. They must have really bad scouts.

There's a zero percent chance he's hit his ceiling... the question is can he realize with his potential with the Flames or does it need to be with someone else. He's been moved so many times between wing and center over the past couple of seasons, no wonder he's not found his groove. New coach, new system and some stability and we'll see. Who his linemates are will also contribute to his success or demise.

The only way he moves is if the return is beyond his potential...

Notice no one who's actually watched him play wants to get rid of him? Sure the points aren't there yet and he takes too many dumb penalties, but everything else about his game has been positive. He was the Flames best forward both times they made the playoffs with him. His line was a great possession line last year. He's shown glimpses of being able to dominate a game when he's rolling. The biggest problem with Bennett is confidence and he gets stuck in his own head. He's got a new coach now and will have a significantly better line this year. There's a very good chance he sees significant time with Lindholm, Neal, or Tkachuk, which is a significant upgrade over Hathaway and Brouwer.

Yeah, he needs to figure things out pretty quickly if he's ever going to be a star in this league and it might be time to move on if next year is a dud, but there's no way they can get a return for him that'll make it anywhere close to worth giving up on him yet.

If we follow your logic, the Leafs should probably just cut Kapanen now because he's never going to amount to anything.
