Possible...trade Sheary, Hagelin, Hunwick and Letang. Get a couple lower-cost but solid D. Assumes Tavares would sign for say 9.5 or 10. Not sure if I would do it, but just saying...

So... trade the #1 D, and 2 wingers... and a junk player... which frees up ~16.5 mil. For a player who might command 10 mil.

We have youth to replace the wingers, luckily... but gotta find a NEW #1 Dman in that scenario.

Also you have Brassard as the 4th liner center now? Jesus Christ...

Very interesting when it comes from a source like that. Imagine Tavares on a 2nd line with Malkin... Ok Im gonna stop there because it doesnt seem possible to happen.

What I am hoping for this offseason is:

1- Trade Hagelin, Sheary for draft picks... Clears up 7 million in cap space.
2- Re-sign Sheahan to 2 year 2.5 per, Rust 3 years 3 million per, Oleksiak 2 years 1.5 per.
3- Sign JVR 6 years 6 million per
4- Trade Hunwick and a 3rd to dump his contract without taking any of his contract back. (wishful thinking)
5- Trade for Alex Petrovic 6th Dman

Guentzel - Crosby - Sprong
JVR - Malkin - Hornqvist
Rust - Brassard - Kessel
??? - Sheahan - ZAR

Dumoiln - Letang
Maatta - Schultz
Oleksiak - Petrovic

Technically speaking, with the cap going up you’d only really need to move Brassard and Sheary, Hagelin or Hunwick.

That said, naga... naga... nagonnahappen.

It really makes no sense. We don't have the TOI to offer him to make it worth it. Nobody's talking about it, but I wonder if Brassard could be moved? Maybe Rutherford will feel it's not a good fit. I'm pretty certain he was hurt, but he never looked comfortable here. Pretty attractive player for only 3mil.

I forgot that there was salary retention, but why would you ever move Brassard to make room for Tavares? Really?

3. Nothing involving Lamoriello gets announced until he decides it does, but a move to the Islanders is the rumour that just won’t die. I do believe there have been talks and that it is a serious possibility. Assuming he does take over, that probably means a new pitch to keep John Tavares. The captain’s done a very good job of staying under the radar, keeping a lid on his future. Someone we do not expect is going to come out of nowhere to take a run at him. It’s purely a guess, but Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is the kind of guy I could see staying up at night figuring out how to do it.

Tavares for Malkin? Purely a guess!

I'm not a "move everyone" "this team needs major changes" kind of guy... this teams done incredibly well, and we are an incredibly lucky fanbase to witness what we have over the past 25 years and more recently the last 10 with the current core.

But MAYBE Rutherford has a trick up his sleeve where he signs Tavares then moves Malkin for a boat load of assests.... Tavares slots in as #2 center and Malkin nets us a 1st rounder, solid top 4 D and top 6 winger... just a theory.

Moving Malkin for Johnny T would expand our window, but honestly we've won our Cups with this team and the core has cemented their legacy. This era of Penguins hockey has been an outstanding success. We're set up to be competitive for about another half decade even if we start to be less dominant along the way. Tavares may or may not ensure at least one more Cup, but I'm not convinced this team doesn't have another one in them either and it would hurt my soul seeing Crosby or Malkin in another team's sweater. I'd gladly trade a Cup or two to see Crosby and Malkin retire Penguins given that they've given us 3 and counting.

RW's use of "wut" confirms he reads the comments...

I don't read that Friedman quote as him actually thinking Tavares and Pens are possible.

Caps looked possesed to start game 1 tonight...

Laying back in that 1-4. Interesting to see if Tampa can adjust.

Did you just see the last 10 seconds of that period? Hahaha wow... What a turn of events. That was probably the best looking non goal I've ever seen... And then maybe the quickest PP goal I've ever seen..
