Actually it's a much stronger, deeper draft this year. And if you haven't noticed the Hawks have drafted in the bottom half in the last 8 years. So they get the late pick and their own earlier one.

Jesus H. Christ! It's Ryan Frickin' Hartman! It's not as if the Hawks just traded Jeremy Roenick for Alexei Zhamnov.

Yokijaru is still in Portland, Mitchell is in his first year at Denver (I think) - neither will nor should be in the plans at the UC for next year - neither has a minute of pro ice time.

How many players are going to be ruined by getting them to the NHL way before they are ready? Especially blue liners?

Talk to the Edmonton Oilers about that.

I don't know much about the draft style of NHL teams (vs. NFL). Are there times/teams in the NHL that actually like stocking draft picks and possibly moving back? Example: Hawks trade 7/8/9 pick + NASH pick to move up to 3/4. I know it happens a bit in the NFL, so wanted to see how it might work in the NHL. If that's the case, and you can get a Tkachuk, it makes the Hartman trade make that much more sense.

EDIT: if you can't view this as a no brainer hockey deal, you are looking at it through fan glasses.

It definitely happens, Burke did it with Vancouver to allow him to draft both Sedins.

Actually the deal was with us for a defenceman whose name escapes me now.

I think, similar to Forsling in 16/17, it's reasonable to expect Jokiharju to play some games in the NHL, but spend most of next year in the AHL. Mitchell is younger and probably further away from playing pro hockey. Jokiharju was a dominant player at the Worlds and in the CHL this year, so fingers crossed that translates to the NHL very soon.

Might be a little more ready since he's played on the small ice for 2 years and Forsling had not.

Bryan McCabe?

I know it's happened before, I was more or less asking how likely/often it happens. In the NFL, it seems to be a thing multiple teams do yearly. NHL, I just don't follow the draft as closely.

Food for thought. Next year's cap situation.

Currently 15 players under contract for next - plus Hossa that will be on LTIR.

Projected Cap hit $60,068,461 (per cap friendly)- plus Hossa $5,275,000

Add $1.5 mil for RFA Duclair (Currently making $1.2)
Add $1.2 mil for RFA Hino (Currently $717,500)
Add $1.5 mil for UFA Rutta (Currently $925,000)
Add $1.0 mil for RFA Gus (Currently $650,000)
Add $833,750 for Ejdsell (may start in Rockford)
Add $925,000 for Sikura (ELC same as Hayden) (may start in Rockford)
Add $1.0 mil for Hayden
Add $872,500 Forsling

That is $68,199,711 (not counting Hossa). 13 forwards, 8 defenders, 2 goalies.

If Cap is $80 mil. The Hawks will have $11,800,289 under the cap.

First priority top pairing right side defender - $6 mil +/- (maybe a John Carlson type)

Side note - If Crow goes on LTIR I would expect the Hawks to make a big play for Raanta (UFA). I would think he will sign in the $4mil +/- range (similar to what Darling got last Summer). That would save another $2mil in cap space.

I didn't realize until yesterday with the Predators' prospect lists that Jokiharju and Tolvanen were taken back to back last draft at 29 + 30. Finland has been producing some elite talents the last few years. Crazy to think Tolvanen slipped to 30th overall and he should be in the NHL next year after dominating at the Olympics.....

But you have to include Hossa's cap hit on day one before you can LTIR him and use his cap space. Same with Crawford, should he have to go on LTIR.

Justin any idea yesterday of what maybe you heard as how close the hawks got to trading Hartman for a young d man like sanhiem/morin for example because in my opinion that what Hartman should've been traded for but don't what other gm's were willing to give up for Hartman. Also any on AA being traded yesterday how close and besides Columbus any other teams interested?

Teams need to be cap compliant opening day so if Crawford ends up on LTIR next year to start the season, all but $500K of your proposed $11.8M budget would be needed to get under the cap, at which point Hossa's $5.3M hit is usable. I doubt Raanta would wait around for the season to start to sign a one year deal. The process repeats every year, so while the hit becomes usable, it isn't useful for multi-year contracts.

Now that Hossa was medically "approved" by the league to be on LTIR, they may be able to move his contract this off season the way every other team has been allowed to do multiple times

I liked what Bowman got back yesterday.

Ryan Hartman starting in the series vs Nashville lost whatever value he had. Fans were hoping for Shaw light and he was far from it. This year being unable to capitalize on numerous chances when playing with Kane, other skilled players. Wingels gets a chance at a cup, and Kempny proved to be a bust.

What I did not like from Bowman was his presser.....talking about veterans finding their form again.......In regards to 2/7/19 who have all regressed over the last 3 years what is Bowman expecting there? Truly? Isn't that the definition of insanity of wanting a different result given the same team? Maybe the younger guys take another step forward but before we ASSUME 12/48 become legit guys to rely on.....see Ryan Hartman.

If I'm the Hawks I'm ALL IN on Karlsson and then I ship out Keith and essentially trade out the 2. You have 2, 1st round picks....this team needs to get younger, and faster on the back end. Keith does not initiate offense anywhere near the level Karlsson does, and a team like Toronto may give you back a nice young F and some picks for Keith depending if they can't make it out of the triangle of death with Boston and Tampa this spring.

I also get a sense that neither Q or Stan are going anywhere, but time will tell.....after last summer's trades of Panarin and Hammer, Stan truly can't do much worse.

- SteveRain

Hartman played the Nashville series with a broken hand. Karlsson is going to command 12M and his play is declining. And you're looking to tie up close to 35M in players 30 or older? Crazy.

One big advantage to having Karlsson is that we would know for sure whose fault it is that the power play has sucked.

The PP sucks because of Kane for the most part. Which is pretty strange but everyone watches him and waits for him to make passes only he can make. Not really his fault but the lack of movement is irritating. With everyone standing still, its easy to clog the passing lanes and puck retrieval suffers, too.

I have a hard time blaming him when everybody else is standing around. Either find different players or implement a new system that has players moving their feet.

I am indifferent to Gustafsson. He can stay or go. Look around the league. You don't need great D-men. You need a system of a 5 man unit working. Yeah, it always be the case but its even more important now. Look at the D-men on Vegas and Pitts.
