At least he's trying something different in that respect (not on the PP, obviously). With Cap or Doug, Beau or Barzal would have sat in the presser to teach a vet a lesson.

Something different with be to play Ho Sang and play MDC in the top 6. Barry is following the Cappy playbook. Offense has not be struggling for just one or two days. Isles do not have enough talent to play Johnston and Martin and sit Ho Sang.

I think Gomez needs to go. The PP is an absolute, pathetic disaster. I get flashbacks from the Crappy/Dougie days and start twitching when the opponent gets a penalty.

Will not help much unless you bring in shoot first type players. The mix needs to be changed with the players.

I want to applaud Barry for bringing the 70's back playing Johnston and Martin. The offense is working so well.
- ses111

I'd say Johnston and Martin should never be in the lineup at the same time, in part because neither should ever be put anywhere other than the fourth line. That's the energy line, there to crash and bang, and that's what those two do. Put any more on their plates and they're just less effective.

But I think the bigger problem with the offense is that the top six needs another big-time game breaker. It's basically Barzal and five support players. I'm sure I've said it before, but I don't think the support players in the top six are that bad at all, there's just too many of them. They need someone else who a) drives the play, and b) steps up in key moments.

I agree UIF. Top 6 needs another game breaker. Does Wahlstrom become this player? Going to be very difficult to trade or sign for this type of player. This team needs a true sniper on the wing with Barzal and a good 2C.

Not this season. Whatever they had in the past appears to be gone.

This is a speed and skill game now. Casey still fits but Cal and Matt will continue to struggle with the current NHL.

Yeah have to wonder if he’s still here if this continues till the end of season. If so that opens up a bunch of questions.

The good news is the last few games barzal is shooting and starting to look like calder winner barzal. The bad news is the rest of the team

I'm not going to pour over ice time stats and matchups, so this is just a guess, but maybe they're being asked to do too much...playing more in a shutdown role rather than just setting the tone.

Martin and clutterbuck are disasters out there id prefer ross out there over both of them, he at least creates a scoring chance once in a while.

Bringing Martin back when Isles had Johnston will never make sense.

I think every player on this team is being asked to do to much and play outside their roles due to the glut of 4th liners and the lack of talent. That was the obvious elephant in the room before the season started. Trotz can only do so much with this line up that’s the bottom line.

If they truly want to win this season (which I’m honestly unsure whether they do or if it’s even a good idea at this point) they need to make changes. Either let the kids play in the Bridge to see what they have or possibly inject some life into this mess, make a trade or just (frank) it and lose.

To just keep things the way they are and stick their heads in the sand like nothing is wrong with no changes is exactly what made us despise past management and coaches. As I said before I wrote this season off from the onset even with their surprisingly good play in the start so whatever but don’t preach accountability with this fan base and not back it up. That’s my issue and benching Pelech to me doesn’t equate to accountability. Show some willingness to change it was in order ten games ago imo.

Beating a dead horse at this point but yeah. Mind numbingly stupid move for multiple reasons imo. I cringe every time I think we helped the Leafs. No team in the league would’ve touched him with a ten foot pole and then we came to the table. Terrible

This! I would just be interested in knowing how involved Barry was in bringing in some of these players this past offseason. I have to think he had some input?

I still think there is a missing draft pick attached to this deal somehow.

Was at the game Monday and spoke with a wife of one of the players and she actually said to me I wonder how Gomez still has a job with the PP being that bad.

You have to figure he held the job from last season due to his past relationship with Lou it certainly wasn’t because of job success. That he still has a job to me is troubling because of past management’s infatuation with friendships over job performance. Maybe there’s nothing to it but he should by all means be on a very short leash at this point.

I think tavares really (frank)ed them and they didnt think he would leave and when he did there was no one to land. There isnt one player that will turn this around so they may not want to part with picks and maybe they want to tank although Hughes is out as they are too far ahead of the really bad teams. Stuck in purgatory once again. Maybe they trade for a guy on the blues or think they can land a top f.a. after the season and not give up prospects idk.

Judging from the lineup decisions, Barry seems to like these type of players.

Well he has in the past this isn’t exactly breaking news. Lou also likes grinder types. That is what caused some fans to have some reservations with him especially after his first moves as manager.
