Its a bit of a shame that the Tavares signing is really taking away from how good of a draft the isles had this year. I'd say this has literally been their best draft, since maybe the 2009 draft, that saw Tavares, DeHaan, Cizikas, and Lee
- kindlyrick

Always tough to grade a draft class without waiting ~5 years, but on paper this may be their best ever in the salary cap era.

All the picks through Skarek in the 3rd round were fantastic. Gets murkier after that, but you never know what late-round guys could turn into.

But yeah, the Tavares situation is 100% overshadowing how unbelievably well they did Friday and Saturday.

I think Wahlstrom makes Bellows majorly-expendable.

Obviously far from the biggest concern this week, but high draft-grades still nice to see:

Pronman:

Grade: A

The Islanders’ Day 1 was big for them, as they added two high-end talents in Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson, with Wahlstrom, in particular, being a massive add to their system. In getting Bode Wilde and Ruslan Iskhakov on Day 2 right away, they got four of my top 20 prospects in the class. That’s a massive injection of talent and fundamentally changed the state of their farm system from being mediocre to one of the league’s strongest. Jakub Skarek was fine at No. 72, a little high for me but he was one of the top goalie prospects. The rest of their picks were a mixture of underwhelming to a shot in dark, but really, this was a great weekend for their future.

SportingNews:

New York Islanders
Grade: A

Does Lou Lamoriello know what he’s doing, or what? The guy’s been on the job for less than a month, and he struts out of Dallas with the best prospect haul of any of his 30 contemporaries. The Islanders were gifted both winger Oliver Wahlstrom (11th) and mobile defender Noah Dobson (12th), both of whom were expected not to last beyond the top 10 picks. Defenseman Bode Wilde (41st) is a thoroughbred with Scott Niedermayer’s quickness and aggressiveness, and Russian center Ruslan Iskhakov (43rd) is a deadly puck wizard who will make goalie look foolish in shootouts. Drafting Jakub Skarek (72nd) could turn out to be a third-round steal if the young netminder lives up to the billing of being the best Czech goalie prospect since Dominik Hasek. And a trio of American-born skaters in Jacob Pivonka (103rd), Blade Jenkins (134th) and defenseman Christian Krygier (196th) will add more speed and strength to New York’s prospect pool. Islanders’ fans will look back on Lou’s first draft with approval both today and five years down the road.

It is nice to have pretty much everyone say what a great draft the Isles had. Any idea why guys like Wahlstrom and Dobson fell?

I don't think it's so much that they "fell" for any reason, as it was that teams value centers very highly. Montreal went off the board to take one, Arizona went way off the board to take one. That pushed a lot of guys back and then there were 1 or 2 surprises and bam, they fell right to the Isles.

Rangers, right or wrong, had tunnel-vision for one specific player. Oilers really coveted a RH defenseman and took Bouchard over Dobson.

I think Ottawa was dumb taking Tkachuk that early and I was a little surprised to see the Hawks roll the dice on Boqvist.

Confirmed teams that John Tavares will meet with this week at CAA offices in L.A.: Dallas, Boston, San Jose, Toronto, Tampa (plus of course NYI). The Tavares camp will also have conversations with 2-3 other teams over the phone and perhaps also meet with 1-2 of them.

Obviously nothing is a sure thing, but the fact that the first three picks were guys who fell farther than anyone expected is MAJOR value. That in it of itself makes the draft a huge success.

Im very torn with the Tavares situation. Its a lot like a woman. If shes into you, you know it. The isles having the extra year, tells me its not about money. I have a feeling its more about daily life as opposed to money or winning. He's gonna get paid no matter what team he picks, and he's also not going to go to a loser. So, to me it boils down to the every day grind, and the adding of games at the coliseum is a direct result of he (and other players im sure), not liking the trek to brooklyn.

I think the money is important, but that's the easy part. Everyone knows he's going to get a big, fat deal...there's no mystery there.

I really think he wants to win. And I think he wants to do that here, but he needs to be sold on the idea that they're going to take every available step to ensure that they do that. I really don't think he's going anywhere, honestly.

Well, the arena is in place, Snowtard isn't the GM anymore, Trotz is the coach. I'm hopeful Lou will bring in some players. I think that's the only missing piece is the players. If Lou has a plan of attack or targets, that should seal the deal.
I'm hoping he comes back, back still have some of the "it's the Islanders" mentality.

Edit - Forgot to mention more games at the Coli.

You may be right, but the idea of listening to other teams tells me he's not sold on the isles. They've done everything possible up until this point to appease him. I know everyone likes to say he's earned the right to talk to other teams. But, thats just being nice. They offered him a very good deal and now have a legit coach and GM. At this point, to me, by listening to other teams he's looking for his out. Who knows.

To much drama with Tavares right now and just hope if he does leave he goes out west.

The future does look bright for once and I think with or without John Lou will find a way to make this team very competitive next year

Only other place I see him signing is the Sharks. He wrecks the salary cap for pretty much every other team interested in signing him that seems to be getting meetings with his camp.

The team that worries me the most is San Jose. If JT's fiancee prefers a mild climate, and the California lifestyle, she could sway him to make the move. I also think San Jose can offer more money to JT than say, Tampa, although Tampa has tax advantages and a better team.

Always though the Sharks were the real threat. I still think JT stays. I'm very interested to see the goalie Lou brings in.

problem is if he agreed to a one year deal he couldn't sign the extension until january 1st - so he's going to play october through december knowing an injury could result in losing 72 million dollars he could have guaranteed by signing with the isles for what, to sign a lower hit with the leafs for 8 years after taking all the risk himself?

the one year deal makes no sense imo.

I think it's gonna be Anderson, if he can either dump some salary OTT's way or get him for a very small cost.

I mean they played for the Cup two years ago and finished 6th in the WC this year. I don't think they're some middling-team

Anderson being 37 is a bummer, but he would come cheap and hopefully he can be a bridge to Sorokin. Would be nice to get a younger goalie who may be blocker somewhere else and might be ready to step up and play more.

I do feel like there's going to be one year where San Jose just falls off a cliff. Their core isn't too young and I'm just waiting for a lot of them to really take a sharp decline one year. Doesn't seem to be happening though.

Hot Hutton
Carter Hutton’s .931 save percentage apparently travels well as eight teams reached out Sunday once the UFA speaking period opened.

I believe by Monday morning that list had been cut down to six teams and likely in two groups, teams offering a solid No. 2 job and teams offering a chance at competing for the No. 1 job.

Teams I know that reached out to the Hutton camp include Chicago, Buffalo, Carolina and the New York Islanders. Obviously, the Isles, Sabres and Hurricanes can offer a chance at competing for a No. 1 job while the Blackhawks, given the uncertainty with Corey Crawford’s health, can at least offer a solid No. 2, plus who knows.

This guy isn’t a one-year wonder, remember that Hutton also pushed Pekka Rinne when he was struggling a few years ago in Nashville.

Mini-camp roster. Mike Babcock's kid is invited. Doesn't mean anything, but it's noteworthy.

When is mini camp? I'm real curious to see how these new kids do. Mostly curious to see about Soderstrom.
