He should have been fired the moment he brought the Hall trade to Katz et al. for approval.

I really did not like that trade because Hall should be an Islander.

Oh.

Well then, that is an acceptable answer.

Why does everybody bring up his scoring (or lack there of)?

He eats a (frank) ton of minutes on the right side of the top pair, and excepting last season (during which he suffered a poop load of personal tragedy) he's one of the best at keeping the other side from scoring. A defender is supposed to defend. If he does that well, then I can forgive lacklustre offensive production.

IMO the Eberle for Strome trade was far more egregious, especially since the supposed cap savings were spent overpaying Russell.

Because for the 21 minutes per night he's on the ice, nothing happens. Like, nothing. For either team.

For $5 million you need more than that, no? Especially considering the amount of production you lost.

out of 5113 total shot attempts for and against the Oilers have had with Larsson on the ice the past two years, the total difference is 27 more shot attempts for than against.

He's very good at suppressing shots in both directions.

If you really want to big-picture it, more like:

To #Isles: Mathew Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, Jordan Eberle

To EDM: Ryan Spooner, 2019 3rd rounder

No. Perhaps it would be for a team than is already defensively sound, but the Oilers certainly weren't that. Preventing goals against was THE overriding need.

As far as the offensive production we lost, I'm confident the Oilers wouldn't have missed Hall alone. Losing Hall AND Eberle though? That was simply too much. Especially since those dollars were used to pay offensive black holes Strome (now Spooner ) and Russell.

That's almost accurate. Should read something like "90% Anthony Beauvillier", because I think Snow used up a 3rd rounder to move up to the late first round to pick Beau. Snow should be kept on the payroll as long as Chia is anywhere in a position of responsibility in the NHL.

Except that neither aspect is any good anyway? If the better defense doesn't translate into any more offense, it's a moot point. If it's just as likely that he gets scored on as it is that the team scores while he's on the ice, what's the point?

Plus the Oilers couldn't score beforehand anyway, and they still can't. At least with Hall and Eberle there was a chance they could have been good at one end of the ice, instead of just mostly crappy at both.

2018-2019: 24th Goals For, 23rd Goals Against
2017-2018: 20th Goals For, 25th Goals against
2016-2017: 8th Goals For, 8th Goals against (a Mirage)
2015-2016: 25th Goals For, 26th Goals against
2014-2015: 26th Goals For, 30th Goals Against

That's my biggest problem with the trade. The Oilers couldn't score anyway, but there was a chance they could going forward if they had stayed the course instead of trading a top-end talent for a guy that, historically, has been a non-factor either way.

Gonna have to agree to disagree on the merits of the trade Bingo. I cannot and will not dispute the numbers you've posted, but nor can I ignore the visual impact that Larsson has had on the Oil.

It's going to be a very interesting deadline and offseason for the Isles. Hope it's a better one than this last offseason.
