Bettman says cap likely going up to $79.5- to 80-million for next season.

Cap going up to about $80M this year, from $75M.

Well that’s certainly encouraging. If Tavares is willing to sign for under 10, then Lou should also be able to squeeze in Lee for 6.

Im really hoping for a top pair d man and not sure they can swing one and lee with barzals deal in two years. This of course depends on Tavares staying or leaving, carlson would be great

Carlson, Brodin, Ristolainen, Barrie, Brodie, Muzzin, Klefbom, etc. Lots or decent defenders rumoured to be available.

There are still a bunch of slots to fill. Unless Lou can work some magic to get some of the bad contracts off the books the Isles will be losing someone next summer.

Right now the Isles have 8 forwards, 5 defense men (assuming they sign Pulock as a RFA) and 1 goalie. That's a lot of slots to fill. Look at the list below. Snow facked them with some of those dumb contracts. There is no way to dump Clutterbuck, Ladd, Mayfield, Cizikas or Greiss without taking it on the chin. I think they could trade Bailey but who would they replace him with? I know you don't like it but the best move may be to sell Lee while his value is high.

FORWARDS
Jordan Eberle RW 1 year remaining
Anders Lee LW 1 year remaining
Anthony Beauvillier LW 1 year remaining (RFA)
Mathew Barzal C 2 years remaining (RFA)
Casey Cizikas C 3 years remaining
Cal Clutterbuck RW 4 years remaining
Andrew Ladd LW 5 years remaining
Josh Bailey LW 6 years remaining

DEFENSE
Ryan Pulock RD 0 years remaining (RFA)
Adam Pelech LD 3 years remaining (RFA)
Johnny Boychuk RD 4 years remaining
Nick Leddy LD 4 years remaining
Scott Mayfield RD 5 years remaining

GOALIES
Thomas Greiss 2 years remaining

I forgot Brock Nelson who is now a RFA.

Fair enough, but my biggest concern is losing both Lee AND Eberle. With Eberle already making 6 mill, how can the Islanders afford to give hime a raise next season?

I get that the Islanders need competent D, but losing your two best wingers would be crippling.

Staple has no idea hes going off what the league believes, however why wait till after the draft to make the announcement?

Maybe they're hammering out the finer points of a Tavares deal and want to steal the show all in one shot? Who knows. There may be some things to iron out in a potential Trotz deal but both sides are comfortable dealing with his agent while he's on vacation.

Yea a verbal agreement would be fine if they let JT know. So many things about to come to a head all at once

Maybe. The JT saga will be over soon, but the rest of it may go on all summer. At least we know with Lou in charge that something will happen.

Well the draft is where he makes his move on a goalie or d man I believe and what he doesn't get there I see him doing at the start of free agency. Coach could drag out but I dont see that either maybe a hockey trade in the summer

I think a pretty large chunk of things either have, or will, be done by the time the draft is over. I'm sure Lou wants to knock out getting a goaltender brought in and would want to use 2018 draft picks (since we have so many) to take care of that. The coaching situation may be able to be solved in the next few days. Tavares will be resolved by no later than 11:59pm on June 30th.

There will obviously be some work to be done in free agency and hopefully he's able to purge some of the overpaid dogshit off the roster...but all the important things should be taken care of in the next week or so.

I am hoping for some moves on draft day. Mainly because I want some of the questions answered as soon as possible but also because I am wary of free agency. IMO pretty much every FA gets signed to a bad contract. If the team were one player away from the Cup then I'd be on board, but there are a number of holes right now. Plus there are already too many bad contracts on the roster.

I really hope the coaching decision doen't drag on. It would be great to front office set and get everyone on the same page.
