If they let both of them go then who replaces them next year? I don't think anyone in Bridgeport will be ready next year.
- JimmyP

They need to upgrade the 2nd center spot regardless of whether Nelson stays or goes. He's playing well but he plays well to start every season and every year Thanksgiving hits and he does his usual disappearing act. I vote to trade him, but I'll get it if they keep him.

Eberle hasn't even talked about an extension with Lou & Co., so he's almost certainly a goner no matter what. May as well flip him at the deadline and get a late 1st for him.

Bellows will have a damn good chance to make the team out of camp. Yes he is a LW and Eberle is a RW, but I'm not gonna get hung up on small details like that a year out. It's entirely possible Wahlstrom goes one-and-done at BC and, in that case, would have a solid opportunity to make the team out of camp.

And lastly, they could always trade for or sign someone. Right now the Isles have four prospects on defense who are playing well in the AHL. Vande Sompel, Toews, and Aho all have 6pts (MVS/Aho in 8gp and Toews in 9gp) and Wotherspoon has 5 in 8GP. They're not all going to play for the Isles, not to mention Dobson and Wilde are going to be coming down the pipe at full speed in a few years. You can package one or more of that first group of near-NHL-ready AHL guys with some other assets to address future holes in the roster.

Tampa is going to have a BRUTAL offseason, having a first-year GM try to keep the current roster together. If I were Lou, I'd be creaming my pants at the thought of acquiring Brayden Point as a 2C, who is going to command a ton on his first RFA deal. Yanni Gourde could be a cap casualty as well, and he'd fit in real nice on the wing.

Isles do have strong prospects on D they can use to trade. It would be great if the Isles found a goalie in Robin. If Isles continue to play well, Lou and Barry will have very interesting decisions to make. Lee I think is a must sign and Eberle seems to be the one to move.

I'd like to keep Ebs if he doesn't want too much more. I am hoping Nelson can be more consistent with real coach, but I'm not sure I'd take a chance on a long term contract. He'd going to be cheaper than Ebs, but Ebs is a known commodity.
- JimmyP

It would be nice to keep Eberle especially if he works so well with Barzal and Beau. I also worry about giving Nelson a long term contract and Eberle is more trusted between the two. Nelson has the edge with the lack of depth at 2C with the Isles and the Isles having Bellows and Wahlstrom.

Took me a minute to find what you said, but I'd even consider trading Lehner (depending, of course, on where the team sits in the standings). If he has a strong year teams that want to sure-up their goaltending situations heading down the stretch and in the playoffs will have interest.

Reply seems to be acting up on this site again. Could be really tough to trade Robin especially since the Isles have no idea on Sorokin and if any other young goalie is ready to step in.

I'm not sure Lehner has much value unless a contender's goalie gets hurt. He's only signed to the end of the season and he still has a lot of negatives to shake off.

I agree about Nelson. He's been frustrating to most Islander fans. You have no idea what you will get if you give him a 6 year deal.

There just aren't many trades these days. Free agents are all ridiculously over paid. Lou won't be the only vulture circling over Tampa this summer.

In other news i think Matthews is out for 4 weeks. Looks like JT going to attract all the attention again. what he has 12 points in first few games and like 2 points in last 4 games.
If Signing Eberle is isles biggest problem, id hate to be Toronto next year.

Totally agree on Nelson, We know he has the tools but he is one lazy player. He is playing for his contract and dont want to be the team having him coast next 6 years after he gets his money

Him being on an expiring deal would be exactly why a contender would want him as insurance if their #1 goes down. Wouldn't be a big return, but I'd much rather have a mid-round pick than nothing. Isles traded Chad Johnson and a 3rd rounder for Michal Neuvirth a few years back, I'm thinking something like that. A backup that can play out the remainder of the year and a 3rd round pick would be great.

2 things on Nelson...1. This is a very different coach who will not allow him to be lazy.
2. this is the age and experience level where a lot of players seem to finally figure it out. (Okposo, Bailey, etc.). While I certainly don't see him as a 2C either.. I am not as concerned about a long term deal. Ideally you would love to have him as your 3C and the Casey line as 4C. Hopefully, that is the plan down the line to have these awful vet signings there to show the kids HOW to play under Trotz system and then move that whole line out. Move the 3rd line to the 4th where it belongs and have the 3rd line be Nelson in middle. Other spots filled by some of our top prospects that were not used to get a Top Center.

Lou may not be the only vulture circling Tampa, but he has an advantage in having a very deep farm system that most other teams won't have. If (yes, big IF) Tampa decides they have to move Point, they're going to require picks/prospects or young, cheap talent back. Isles would absolutely be able to get them the kind of talent they're looking for.

what kind of money can eberle actually be looking for? does he deserve much of a raise above what he making already? id like to keep him but not if he wants more than 6m.

Unless isles in a serious position to make a run i can see Eberle and Nelson being traded. Nelson looks good this year and will play his butt off to get a big contract. not sure want to spend my money there.

- Spartiarti

The team is weak at center now how can you get rid of nelson?

Because he's a pending UFA and the Islanders are almost certainly not going to make the playoffs. There's no guarantee he stays if they don't trade him. So unless they go on some sort of inexplicable tear this year and are actual contenders by deadline-time then there is no discernible reason to keep him. If he loves it here that much he can always come back and re-sign on July 1st.

Well they need to get someone in there that can play 2c and he may resign early. If they are close at deadline he is staying. I guess inwasnt thinking abiut him being a f.a.

Yeah, if they're 3 or 4 points outside the playoffs then I could see them hanging on to him, but I think it's highly unlikely they'll be in that spot.

Otherwise, they need to find another way to acquire a center. I've mentioned a few in the past. Skipping Brayden Point because we were just talking about him earlier, Schenn would be another option and St. Louis is A) cap-strapped and B) having a total nightmare of a season so far.

It's been reported that Eberle's camp has had zero contract talks with the Islanders mgmt. You can pretty much take it to the bank that he'll be traded by the deadline, unless the Isles are seriously in the hunt. I still vote for trading Nelson, we've all seen him play well just to have his annual disappearing act show up at some point.
- eichiefs9

Trade them both at the deadline for premium futures, then parlay a portion of said futures for established signed talent.

Done and done.

They might be. The three point games keep everyone bunched up in the bubble area. We've seen bad teams be only 6 points back late in the season. It's the main reason I dislike the three point games.

This is exactly what they should do. Absolute worst case scenario, you add another 1st round pick and some 2nd/3rd's and you just...draft. This year is shaping up to be a solid draft year so that wouldn't be the end of the world.

But if I'm Lou, I'm flipping Eberle somewhere for a late 1st and then trying to package that 1st + other assets into a deal for Point/Schenn/etc...

3pt games are terrible, no argument there.

My own personal opinion is that if the Islanders aren't well inside the playoffs by the deadline, trade them anyway. If we're 1pt up on someone for a wildcard spot, I'd dump them both regardless. Like you pointed out, with how close everyone remains to the playoff bubble...the chances of the Isles staying inside the playoff picture are not good.
