I thought the same and if all broke right they could make the playoffs. Barry made the team worth watching and he was right wanting to get paid.

I think they could make the playoff, but I don't think it's likely. There are so many questions with the team its hard to guess what they can do. The two big questions in my mind are can the second line can keep producing and can the goaltending can hold up.

Eberle is going to make it tough to trade him but I think it's the right move especially with Wahlstrom and even Bellows in the pipeline. Isles can get a nice return for Eberle and keep Lee.

If Robin and Thomas can hold, team will be in good shape in making the playoffs. I think the top two lines can be productive. If the Isles get close to the playoff Barry should be coach of the year.

I was wondering were you were schwein. Lee is the real deal and real captain. MDW has to be thrilled having Lee on his fantasy team. Regarding Eberle, I hope Barzal understands if the Isles end up trading him.

Been a busy week, but I’ve managed to catch a couple games on audio. Still not quite sure what to make of the Islanders as whole TBH.

I get your concern Jimmy but imho the NLB line has stepped it up and if we have 2 lines that can produce we will be that much ahead. With our 3rd and 4th line playing well of course.

I've been impressed with Barry since his Preds days and wanted him hired when he was let go. To be fair most Isles fans wanted Barry as well. I remember Cpt wanted to hire him after the Preds. Garth will never admit it but I'm sure he is having these moments watching Barry.

This may be true and Garth can tell himself anything, but these are his players and Barry is making them look like a functioning and decent NHL team.

It would be different if this was a new roster with Lou and Barry players. These are Garth's players. Even when the Isles were beating the Panthers in the playoffs, they never looked this good and playing a real NHL system.

what kind of money can eberle actually be looking for? does he deserve much of a raise above what he making already? id like to keep him but not if he wants more than 6m.

Unless isles in a serious position to make a run i can see Eberle and Nelson being traded. Nelson looks good this year and will play his butt off to get a big contract. not sure want to spend my money there.

Sure, yesterday's game could have just as easily been a Carolina one-goal victory, but I wouldn't say the Isles just got lucky stole one, either (even though the shots were lopsided). I think it could have gone either way, and the Isles hung in there and, for the most part, skated with a fast team that's playing really well. And the way they protected the one-goal lead in the third was...well...something they haven't been able to do that effectively since Nolan was the coach...there aren't nearly as many mad scrambles in front of the net even when they're pinned in their own zone for a shift.

Great to see Nelson and Bailey playing so well (I was never worried about Lee). The issue with those two isn't whether or not they have the skill, but whether they can show it consistently, so I'm not 100% sold yet on them carrying a second line, but you can't argue with how they've played the past few games.

Hopefully those guys remain a consistent threat and take some heat off the first line because teams are all over Barzal now. I have no doubt he'll still rack up points, but he's fighting hard for every single one of them now.

Mayfield's good for one or two bonehead plays a game, but otherwise looks pretty damn solid out there. Perfect for a 5-6.

I'm trying to give Pelech a fair chance...he makes some decent plays defensively, but man, once he gets the puck it's like it just has a magnet that attracts to the other team. He can't clear the zone to save his life, and even when he has time, he just throws it up ice to the other team instead of making a play. It felt like he was on the ice forever yesterday but he ended up with the least amount of ice time.

Think they might start trying a different look on the power play soon...

It's been reported that Eberle's camp has had zero contract talks with the Islanders mgmt. You can pretty much take it to the bank that he'll be traded by the deadline, unless the Isles are seriously in the hunt. I still vote for trading Nelson, we've all seen him play well just to have his annual disappearing act show up at some point.

That was a huge 4 points this weekend gents... very exciting to see this team buying into Trots' system. Taking the hit to make the outlet pass on the break. clearing the zone a priority. Defenseman thinking Defense first... Forwards making sure there are guys back before joining the rush. Everyone keeping guys away from the front of the net. It's a pleasure to watch.

my thoughts...

I certainly like the first 2 lines at this point. I can't complain much about Bailey but he still passes when he should shoot sometimes. Brock and Lee are playing great. I love that Barzal line and think they will have a breakout game in the very near future. The MM/CC/ whoever line is fine as a 4th line. That other line is still painful to watch. While the Canes have played well thus far I don't put them as a top team and while we can play with most teams.. when we come against a top team that line will kill us. They spend way too much time in the D-zone. Can't clear the puck and have no ability to do anything other than Dump and change when they finally do clear the zone.

Mayfield is beginning to Flourish under this coaching staff. They keep talking about how big of a difference his play is from the beginning of camp to this point. He has been starving for the right coaching. He is going to continue to improve and I am excited to see what kind of player they can make out of him. He has made some errors for sure but over all looks 100% better than last year.

Pulock looks great and has been our best D-man by far this year.
Leddy- still way too soft in own end but finally not giving puck away like crazy or being way out of position in own end constantly. I have hope he will be a great player by end of the year.
Boychuk- love his physical play. That was his best game by far but still he is not a top 4 pairing guy at this point.
Pelech- maddening.
Hickey continues to be the one D-man who continues to make those painful plays that were standard on last year's team. On at least 3 occasions he tried to pinch at his own blue line to stop a rush, failed and it ended up being one of the few good chances the Canes had in the game. If he doesn't get what Trotz is saying soon he will be the guy in B-port.

Ladd is horrific. He is a turnover machine in his own end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FFUbOJjrNc 1 minute mark is perfect example of what Hickey keeps doing that has to stop. Every game he is the one guy who still makes these mistakes.

I agree they’re playing with more structure and discipline but I will say they were to me outplayed last night. The canes nearly doubled their shot total. The main difference to me is last season or even seasons past they lose that game in the third up by a goal. They buckled down and ultimately played a good road game in the third. Trotz seems to be lessening that fear of losing that you could see they always had up by a goal in the third period. Coaching goes a long way they were outplayed but ultimately found a way to win and that’s what matters. Hopefully they can keep it up.

If they let both of them go then who replaces them next year? I don't think anyone in Bridgeport will be ready next year.

I know Bellows can be used but the problem is the Isles do not seem to have a 2C in the system.

I'd like to keep Ebs if he doesn't want too much more. I am hoping Nelson can be more consistent with real coach, but I'm not sure I'd take a chance on a long term contract. He'd going to be cheaper than Ebs, but Ebs is a known commodity.
