Could (and maybe should try to) probably sign him for free in the offseason, especially if he has a down year with OTT. Hell, depending on the price...I'd try and trade for him now and flip him at the deadline for another 1st round pick.

He’s legit......personally I’d trade for him now and send Nelson walk-in.

That's another thing some of you need to understand. NOBODY that good is signing with the Isles for at least 3 more years. It's time to face reality with that one, which makes me crackup when people talk about keeping as much cap space as possible like anybody is coming here Don't even say trade either because they are not gutting their prospect pool to trade for one either

He probably won't sign a crazy lucrative deal if he has another down year in OTT. He may come cheap-ish. I wouldn't even care so much about the dollars as I would about the term. He'll be 28 this offseason and I couldn't imagine signing him to a max-term deal.

They probably will and the truth is that they're going to suck a mile of ass no matter if it's vets or younger kids in the lineup.

To be clear, I'm not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill here (just making a point)....but you'd think they know that they play in, arguably, the best division in hockey and that the chances of them having a successful season are slim-to-none...so why not at least try giving Bellows a few games out of the gate? Same with Ho-Sang...those are both waiver-exempt players and I see no reason they shouldn't at least be given a chance to stick. No harm in that. If they aren't good enough to be everyday players then they can be sent back to BPT without issue.

I'm not upset that Bellows was sent to BPT, but I do think it's kinda stupid that after a strong camp he wasn't at least given a handful of games. I'd say a third line of Bellows-Kovar/Filppula-Ho Sang sure looks better than the Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck line, who would be far better suited as the fourth line. The Kuhnhackl-Filppula-Komarov is going to be utterly putrid.

100% Agree... Let the kid make it impossible for you to send him down to AHL. He was certainly doing that in the preseason.

I think he’s gonna get 8 for 8....or whatever max term is. 8 for 7?

Believe me, I'm not under any false beliefs that anyone worthwhile is going to want to sign here.

But as far as cap space, it is incredibly valuable. There are plenty of trades out there to be made for decent but overpaid players that could bring additional assets along with them. Cap-strapped teams that are in a bind and need to clear space usually cough up some nice picks or a decent prospect in order to shed a bad contract. They could have filled the holes that Komarov/Cluetoggle/Martin filled with equally-useless canon-fodder and then tried to make a shrewd move or two that would have eaten up the same amount of cap space but landed them some assets that would help speed up the rebuild.

8yrs if you sign with the team you're currently playing for, 7yrs if you go to UFA and sign elsewhere.

That's pretty shortsighted. They have 8 forwards signed beyond this season and 6 of them are Ladd, Clutterbuck, Cizikas, Komarov, Martin, and Johnston.

Lee, Eberle, and Nelson are all UFA's and Beauvillier will need a new deal as well (he's obviously an RFA).

Can you name one time the Islanders didn't make a trade or sign somebody because they didn't have cap space? Just one time? I'll wait. My point being there is always a way to lose a contract or two. For a team that has never been capped out its sure talked a lot on here likes its gonna be their downfall

I know everybody sucks and this guy is slow and this guy is this and the truth is you've probably seen him play a total of 2 games just like everybody else you talk about without every watching them play here or there. I'll watch him myself and then decide how good or bad he is. I won't listen to others and then just say what they say. I'll actually form my own opinion about the player
- Vukota

Agree Mick. I havent seen Komarov either.

One thing with Lou/trotz is we wont see a guys just taken roster spot all season if he not contributing. I dont think Lou brought Komarov, Kovar and Fillipula b/c they the secret recipe to win cup. He brought them in to challenge and work the talented guys that got comfortable having secure spot line up. If it hasnt sunk in to Nelson yet, he will find out after few game when he riding the Pine or in streetclothes in skybox.

Can you name a time in recent memory where Garth Snow wasn't at the helm? What happened to waiting for Lou to finish more than 5% of his watercolor painting or whatever the hell you actually said?

If they didn't sign an idiot like Komarov to that deal, they could go trade peanuts for Zack Smith and get him at 50% of his current cost. Now that's a 3rd line center I could get behind. Instead we have Val Filppula, who's last name sounds like it would be the scientific name for some part of the vagina.

siiver lining of no JT, 12M more available for Lee, Eberle and Nelson.
Love how they talking in media how JT has made great chemistry with marner, Well that is what good players do. JT also had great chemistry with Moulson, Okpsos, PAP, Vanek, Bailey, Lee and list goes on.

i cant wait till the toronto faithful get the glimpse of the bad side of JT. They holding on the puck too long in OT or failure to get back to backcheck. Ill be curious to see how our lineup look in next two games. Will the Buffalo game Friday be televised?

There really shouldn't be any hate for Boychuk. He's a 34 year old (35 in Jan.) defenseman that has played a physical game his entire career. It's not surprising that his body and game are breaking down. The anger should be directed at Garth Snow, who signed him to a contract knowing that the first half of the deal would have to justify the second half. Everybody should have known that the back-end of 55's deal was going to look bad once he started declining.

Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, Garth didn't even come close to justifying the first half of that deal. He failed to build a team that was competitive enough to make Boychuk's last few good years worth the rest of the term of that deal.

- eichiefs9

Also, the guy just had knee surgery everyone cut him some slack. Boychuk is a legitimate good veteran and he’s invaluable to this team imo.

Don’t agree with this. Let’s say by some miracle we’re competitive in two years and we are tied to one of these half treads. 2 or 3 million adds up and it has the potential to become a problem that was unnecessary to create to begin with.
