So Lou signed questionable guys to 4-year contracts to tank this season??? Or are you saying they are trying to tank the next 4 seasons??? I'm just trying to understand your position.
- JohnScammo

He just doesn’t like the signings because on paper they’re just basically bottom six guys who don’t address the departure of a 37 goal Tavares. At least that’s my take on what he’s saying.

Let’s be clear tough. Other than Martin they didn’t really bring in “goons”. They brought in guys who play a specific brand of hockey. Block shots, finish checks, go hard to the net.....play the PK. They didn’t just go out and get guys who can’t skate. They brought in a certain brand......clearly trying to change the culture.

I always thought Tavares was super talented, but unfortunately he didn’t have jam. As a result, guys were too relaxed. For me, I’d rather a Messier type who would call guys out in the room. To me, that’s a Captain.....not just a guy who’s got elite talent.

Wasn't Johnston signed to a 4-year contract? Or are you saying he's there for his hockey skills?

My position is it doesn’t exactly look like he’s trying to succeed and if this is his recipe for success we’re in some serious shat. Do you think signing these guys looks like we’re trying to win?
- Cptmjl

Honestly, I did not understand the signings any more than anyone else. Does that make me think Lou is trying to tank for the next 4 years? No. But that's just a hunch.

No and Tom Wilson also started out as a similar player and after 4 years became a major clog on the cup winning caps.

Yeah, I didn't hate the Johnston signing as much as some. The $$ are such that he can be hidden in the AHL with no cap hit, if he doesn't turn into the next Tom Wilson. It's just that most of the skill he has shown to date has been with his fists.

Doesn’t address anything besides having two fourth lines and commiting a lot of money to bad players for multiple years. Do you seriously disagree with this? I mean there’s maybe three guys on this thread that completely disagree with the rest of the world on this subject. Is it so hard to say these signings are terrible because Lou did them?
I’m hopeful they surprise but how could anyone say these signings are a blue print of a gm trying to ice a winning team this season? Maybe he’ll do something to change that before the start of the season but come on.

Trust me, every fan that chirps his signing will be standing on their feet should Martin be injured and someone runs Barzal.

Do we really need to rehash all the player moves? OK, for starters, I hated the trade for Matt Martin. I questioned the 4 years given to Komorov. I wondered about the contract extension to Hickey. 4 years to Johnston seemed a little long, but see my previous post. I think the others were 1 or 2 year deals, which I can live with.

I have no (frank)ing idea what he’s trying to do? Maybe that’ll change with new additions before the season starts but maybe it’s just the islander fan in me I don’t see that happening😂

Because it’s not the blueprint of a GM trying to ice a winning team. It’s taking over 12 years of suck and having to field a team at the last minute. So rather than give up the farm, sprinkle in some grinders and be competitive while you address your inherited roster. We’ve watched a soft isles team for years. If nothing else we get to see huge hits and some take no sh!t hockey while they see what they have. That’s my take...

I’m gonna laugh when Martin, Cizikas, Clutterbuck tilt the ice AGAIN.

Why do you question 4 years of Komorov? He’s a need on any team for his PK, aggressive style, complete with shot blocking and driving the net. I’ll disagree on him.....i like the signing.

Hickey is prob the only one I’ll agree with.

Tom Wilson is a former first round pick that scored in juniors and was picked in the first round for multiple reasons. Johnston is well... you know. Bad comparison. They can bury Johnston in the minors but if there were an obvious unnecessary contract out of all of the unnecessary contracts we just signed up for he’s a prime example. Were other teams threatening to sign him so he had to lock him up for four years? Give me a break. I laugh when I think of the shock on Johnston’s agents face when that offer came across the table. Hahahaha

Was it directly helping the Maple Leafs after they signed Tavares or being stuck with him for another two years(that was for you vukota)?

Dal Colle is also a first round pick and Lee was a 6 round pick. You never can go by that. The point was Wilson first 4 seasons had him being a 15-20 pts a year guy. Maybe Lou thinks he’s got a Tom Wilson. Who knows. The point about the signing is it’s not a big deal, and Lou likes to have guys in the lineup who aren’t piss!es

I like your optimism, rick! And you're right, the Isles have long had a reputation for being a soft team. So if nothing else, at least that issue has been addressed. Now I'm getting psyched for the season to start!

I don’t know what’s been addressed other than you needed to cut down the GA (Trotz will implement a more defensive style). You needed to improve the PK.....which they have. Lastly, you need more guys willing to drive the net which they have. The isles will be competitive and a hard team to beat. They’ll steal some pts from teams sleeping on them

I don't want to rehash the Martin trade, because I already had a lengthy argument with our resident Uber driver. But if you're going to relieve another team of a $2.5 MM cap hit for a guy who isn't even playing, why not at least pick up some draft picks in the trade?

He’s a role player and Lou is big on players having and then knowing their role. The isles lacked that for the last decade. Case in point is Josh Bailey. They drafted a playmaking center, stuck him on wing, then had him playing a checking wing bottom 6 role for 4 years only to bring him up to play first line wing. Player NEEEEED to know their role. You’re gonna like Komorov.

I agree with everything(which was my point to JS it’s not a blue print of a gm trying to ice a winning team which was my point which as usual got lost)minus “sprinkle in some grinders and be competitive”. If that is what makes teams competitive in today’s nhl I’m not sure what the rest of these other gms are doing wasting money on all of these talented guys? 🤨
