de Haan simply did not live up to the hype. He was not drafted as a Rich Pilon type who had no puck skills at all. Isles traded up possible could have stayed put to draft de Haan. Getting Hughes would be worth having a lousy season, but the odds are not good the Isles would get him. Still think Barry and his coaching skill will get the Isles enough point to miss out.

The X factor for sure it Trotz. Some of the most idiotic coaching moves witnessed have been under cappy and dougie. Having a bonafide coach has immeasurable potential. Well, we'll be able to measure as the season goes, but you know what I mean. Coaching is everything.

Ses, unless saw him as an Oshawa General or on Team Canada you didn’t see CDH as an 18 year old. He played 1 game at 21 with the Islanders and about a half a season at 22 with the Islanders.
I don’t think he was ever touted as an offensively gifted defenseman who could play a steady game on the back line and for me he basically played out as the Scouts book read imho.

I saw de Haan in a pre-season game. I think it was against the Devils. I thought de Haan was known for his offensive skills? Either way he was not worth the extra picks Garth ended up trading. Maybe the injuries took their toll?

No way do I think the Isles will make the playoffs but I think Barry will have the team playing solid hockey. Have to think we do not see the same lousy defense night after night.

Weren't you the one who posted his pre draft bio of carrying a pp? That means point producing d man in my book. Regardless, hes gone and we move on.

Could be Ses, the injuries are tough. I just think looking at his game on an Islanders Team that was dreadful defensively. I think he will have a good year with Carolina with the young rear guard they have there, he may be able to play a bit more offensively. Time will tell.

Not saying they'll make the playoffs, however, they'll certainly pick up points where left behind by past coaching errors. This team will be legit in a few years if not sooner despite the roster, solely due to coaching. Trotz - and no coach for that matter is a miracle worker - but they know how to put players in roles to win.

Just because he plays PP in Jrs doesn’t mean he will play it in the NHL. I don’t think he sniffed the PP on Team Canada so.....

It would not be surprising if de Haan has a good year. He sure is due for some luck in terms of injuries. I cannot blame the Isles for losing de Haan. I think he wanted a change and he and the Isles needed a change. You always have to worry with de Haan and you have to hold your breath with each big hit he takes and wonder if his shoulder will go again.

Right, I guess same thing can be said about forwards. I'm no pro scout, just remember moving up for him, which you usually don't do for stay at home d man. That's it for me on this one!

No doubt that shoulder is a concern.
The Islanders tried hard to sign him. They didn’t want him to leave, however I think after last year dealing with Snow Balls it soured his taste and the new guys couldn’t convince him. Simple as that. I would have liked to have him only because I thought he was our best defensive defenseman last year, however he’s gone now so good luck.

I cannot blame de Hann if he wanted out. I think in the long run it's best for both sides. Isles need to turn to Pulock, Toews, Pelech, and others now to see if they could be answers going forward.

Yeah, he said he turned down more money from other teams, so it wouldn't shock me if Lou made a hard push to keep him around.

No choice right?

I think Trotz will shape the whole team, forwards and rearguards into being defensively aware and we will see a big difference defensively in a good way.

100% they wanted him.

I think he will fit in nicely with the Canes blue line.

Barry is going to have the cred of being a Cup winning and long time very good coach. Players will need to buy in or else. Country club is dead.

Indeed. Cant wait until October to see how a few of these guys react to an NHL coach.

Going to be great to watch a real coach and will systems and real answers and a coach who will flip out on the players when needed instead of Shannon Hogan.

Dehaan:
Would like to thank my friends, family and the fans for the continued support the 5 past years with the @NYIslanders. I can’t thank them and the orginzation enough for some of the best times and memories in my life, especially helping me get through the tough times...

Some guys response:
Have to love it: yet another deserter love letter (aka Dear John/Jane letter) to fans of a professional athlete (mostly hockey players). Perhaps each hopes his beloved fans will buy a new team sweater as well as keeping the old one. Better to do nothing- just leave for the $$$! https://t.co/04Pdf1b3v6

Dehaans response:
Easy squid. You don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. I loved my time as an islander.
