Any idea what the Habs want in return? I think Pacioretty would be a perfect addition to the post Tavares isles.

I have no idea but I would do bellows, 1st, 2nd with him signing s contract. Adding another leader would be pretty big for this team imo. I know some aren't big on the idea but I would do it in a second.

I found it interesting that Nelson stated, eluding to Barzal, that he could "lean on guys like that." He mentions open opportunities. He mentions Lou running a tight ship. Not once does he say anything about elevating his game, stepping up or trying to lead in any way, shape or form. The shadow of JT is gone. He should be doing everything he can to make himself better and stand out. Nope, just gonna go ahead and fall into the next shadow. Typical Nelson.

Of course he would never aspire to be the guy that others lean on.

Nope. Reckon not. I still think he could put up a lot of points if used properly. And maybe threw out some effort.

He doesn't strike me as a guy who is striving to say the right things constantly. Introverted and awkward. I'm kind of excited to see what Trotz can get out of him. If there's going to be a surprise this season I think it'll be him

Your lips to Gods ears. I've said it for a couple years now, if Nelson was utilized properly, I think he could put up 60-80 points. Front of the net, high slot, PP time and he'll do good. He started last year playing in front of the net and high slot and was scoring big. Then for whatever reason (coaching, fear, laziness?) he went back to playing along the half wall and disappeared. I don't think he doesn't have talent. Quite the contrary. I just don't think he's been utilized properly, hasn't been pushed/motivated and (obviously) hasn't had a good coach. Just my opinion, but what do I know. I'm just a typing head on HB. And I'm always wrong. No, no, that's 7. Guess I'm just a desert rat with too many high powered weapons and a cooler full of beer. Gonna be a good day.

But they have Anderson. The isles have...Lehner and Greiss. Plus, the leafs have a tad more firepower than the isles will
- Jethro09

I’m referring to all the hockey wizards up north who think the laughs will now win the cup with Tavares. Totally disregarding the weak backend (like the isles)

I would do that in a second as well. Leadership and actual goals which were lost by Tavaresekov

I'd rather save those assets to make a run at Panarin. Younger and much more talented than MaxPac.

Different styles of hockey........i'd be happy with either. I guess the question is who would come cheaper. My only question mark with Panarin is his being on 3 teams in 4 years (if traded now)......thats a little red flag, no?

Not really, the Blackhawks traded him because they didn't think they'd be able to afford his next deal and Saad had a manageable contract. The Blue Jackets don't want to trade him, but if he wants to be with his GF in NY then they don't really have a choice. I don't see any red flags at all.

Pacioretty would come cheaper but he's 29 on an expiring deal. Do you wanna give him another 5-7 years? I don't. Panarin is 26, also on an expiring deal, and a way better player. I'd happily extend him for 7-8 years over Pacioretty.

Edit: In fact, Montreal publicly saying that they do not intend to negotiate with Pacioretty/his agent for a contract extension is a much bigger red flag to me than anything that has ever transpired with Panarin.

Fair enough......I just feel like when a guys is as talented as Panarin, its very surprising to see him being passed around as much. I thought he was gonna be on the Hawks forever. I agree that Panarin is more talented and younger, but I think this isles team is prob looking more for the Pacioretty type player after seeing their recent signings. It would also give the isles a legitimate NHL Captain.

Edit : if the isles could land Panarin, i'd forget about Tavaresekov real quick

I mean the Hawks painted themselves into a corner. I still think they got fleeced on that deal, I would have paid way more for Panarin than Brandon Saad 1-for-1. But at the time they couldn't clear the space necessary to pay Panarin what he was going to get as a UFA.

Panarin put up similar numbers to tavares so he would replace that offense and patches is a better d zone player but of the two id take panarin he gives barzal a legit threat on another line to take the pressure off. I doubt we get either and i wouldnt want to give up wahlstrom or dobson but bellows and a pick i would

It's a long shot, but the reports were that Panarin wanted to play in NY and Friedman even admitted that he said he couldn't get confirmation that "NY" meant "the Rangers" or "Islanders or Rangers". Apparently his GF is a model that lives in NY so that's a major factor in him wanting to be around here. Rangers may not want to part with the assets to land him and he may not even want to play for a team that figures to take their time rebuilding.

He's not arb-eligible. If you sign your contract before age 20 then you need to be in the NHL for at least 4 years (not sure what constitutes a full season) before you're arbitration eligible.

Just as an FYI:

If you go to the Isles CapFriendly page and look at the contract status...the RFA's with the little gavel next to "RFA" are the ones that are eligible for an arbitration hearing. If it just says "RFA" then they don't get to utilize the arbitration process.
