I think the culture they’re trying to build is team first. The individual success comment about Tavares kinda stood out although Lou would never admit it.
So they’re gonna kick ass for a year or two......I’m down with that.
I also think Ho Sang and Bellows are gonna have surprising years under Trotz. Those two are X factors.

Do Ho Sang and Bellows even have spots with all these signings?

Upon further review, I was correct.

I think Ho Sang is gonna get real minutes and even if bellows doesn’t make opening night he’s definitely getting called up and will stay.
We also don’t know what will happen before opening night. Who knows if there will be a trade.

I think Bellows needs a full-year in BPT before we have a really good idea of what he is going to be. He may fall into a call-up if there are enough injuries, but my guess would be that he is primarily a Sound Tiger all year and that's OK. I wouldn't even be surprised if he ended up as trade bait, since he's basically a watered-down, less-dynamic version of Wahlstrom anyway.

Not even going to try and predict what will happen with Ho Sang. He's as likely to retire to become an astronaut as he is to play in the NHL.

I'm going to have to see some of these vets the Isles signed playing in Bridge before I believe it. I rather just give a player like Ho Sang the entire year with Trotz instead of giving 4 years to Leo. Ho Sang at least has real upside and now has a real coach.

I agree about Bellows. Think he plays the year in Bridge. I have no issue giving Ho Sang another chance especially with the way he can skate and the Isles finally having a real coach.

Before we go any further Isles fans are gonna love Komarov. Ask any leaf fan and they’ll tell you he’s a gem.

I think Ho Sang has a much better chance at making the team when camp breaks than Bellows. In fact, I hope he's on the roster because I think he does more good for the team than bad.

I have concerns that Bellows is a one-trick-pony that has a wicked shot but doesn't offer a particularly well-rounded game. I'd really like to see him get top-9 minutes in BPT before I can say any of that fairly though.

I've only seen Leaf fans making fun of the signing. I've not seen much positive at all. I've seen most of the NHL praise the Isles Draft and trash their free agent signings.

Going to be interesting to see how this team shapes up in camp. Again you have to think more moves are coming but who knows? Bellows does seem a lot like Lee in terms of not bringing a well rounded game.

I was just at a wedding for an NHL guy and there were a lot of Toronto boys there. All of them said we’re gonna love Leo.

Not to be a d!ck but the HB people mostly are arm chair athletes. Either way he brings an intangible that the isles have been lacking from the former captain down. Heart

One-way contract means the player is paid the same money whether he's playing in the AHL or NHL. So Ross Johnston will be a $1M AHL player, best case scenario. The cap implications are an entirely different issue.

According to that link, cap relief = players cap hit - (league minimum + $375k)

So, in this case (the way I'm understanding it):

$1,000,000 - ($650,000+$375,000)

$1,000,000 - $1,025,000 = ($25,000) or the Islanders basically save the entire value of Johnston's contract plus $25k by sending him to the AHL? I'm not sure I'm interpreting that one correctly, but that's what it seems like based on CapFriendly's explanation.

The simple answer is that the Isles can bury Johnston and his entire cap hit in the minors. Assuming I'm correct, which I'm not particularly confident about.

I don't mind honest competition for spots. I think a lot of Islanders are too comfortable and could use a push. The thing is, what are the chances we see any actual consequences?

Barring a big trade or two, the way I see this shaping up is you have about 8 or 9 guys competing for top-six spots (Barzal, Beau, Eberle, Lee, Nelson, Bailey, Ho-Sang, Ladd, and maybe one or two others), and about the same number competing for bottom-six spots (Cizikas, Martin, Clutterbuck, Johnston, Filppula, Kovar, Komarov, Kuhnahkl, and probably one or two I’m forgetting). In a perfect world, the best six from each group get spots, and the pressure would really be on guys like Bailey, Nelson and Ladd, who could really use the push. With so many bottom-six players competing for those roles, the message should pretty much be that Nelson and Ladd need to lock down top-six roles, or else. The question is, or else what? What do you do with a player like Ladd if he’s beat out for a top-six spot?

And you run into the same issue in the bottom six with some of the contracts handed out. I’m not sure what you do with Komarov, for example, if he comes in here and bombs, given the contract he got. Or what you do with Filppula’s NMC if he proves to be a bad option.

So, if the idea is to make comfortable people uncomfortable through real competition, I like that. But it’s hard for me to see a scenario where three or four aging vets with crazy contracts get waived if they’re out-competed. More likely, those who can easily go down to the AHL will probably go down to the AHL while garbage players with garbage contracts get preference because of their “experience.” But, we’ll see. Maybe this is really a new era and I’ll get surprised.

Oh I'm not defending it. It's stupid and I hate the deal. I wouldn't have even re-signed Ross Johnston, let alone paid him that much money for four years. But whatever, if he stays where he belongs at least it doesn't directly affect the club all year.

Can you break this down in terms of Uber fares? How many rides do you need to get to $800?

I know you werent advocating it my issue is he takes up so much space or can each contract be burried? I thought it was cumulative so they are on the hook for anything over that 1.25 million if say they send kuhnackle down too

No I believe it's on a per-contract basis. I'm sure Kuhnackel could be buried as well. For the most part, anyone making over $1M is going to count against the cap somewhat if they get sent down.
