Eh, I think the article is incredibly short sighted.

Either a team is trying to win this year, or it is building to win in the future.

Yeah, that's obviously true, but the idea that the trade deadline is the definitive day to go 100% one way or the other is, well, wrong, and it doesn't really reflect where the Isles are.

They're not built to win a Cup this year. Doesn't mean they can't, but, while he'd never admit it, I don't think Lou was even considering a Stanley Cup in the first season when he took over. If anything, he was trying to "change the culture."

So, given that they're not built to win the Cup this year, should Lou have sold all of his players for picks and prospects at the deadline while the team was sitting in first place so he could build to win in the future? I bet this same guy would have called him insane for doing that.

With the team in first place, then, should Lou have pretended he believed all along they were going to win the Cup this year and sold all of his picks and prospects for a couple of rentals and bet the team's future on an out-of-nowhere run?

I think, for once, the Isles made the best move for their situation. There are really big decisions to be made for next year's team, and Lou didn't do anything during the Deadline Day craze that will limit his options when he has to make those decisions during the offseason. But, with the team pulling off a surprise run, he didn't break it all up and sell players off, either. Now they can see how far their fortune takes them this season and still be in a good position to build something better this summer.

I’m not saying I’m judging him on it I said he will be judged(writers, other fans, etc). If this team gets its doors blown off in the first round or doesn’t make the playoffs because they still can’t score a goal it’d be a good bet a vast majority of writers and fans will question him doing nothing. I’m not saying I will I’ve alaways been on the fence which I’ve stated numerous times ad nauseam but others will.

good post.. agree on all. I think the best thing that Lou did that most GM would not have done is once he did not land the 2 big fishes he was after he did not make a move to just make a move. I like that most of all... why bring in another "ok" guy to jam in the mix at the cost of young guys on the team.

yep, I hear you...but I also don't think Isles ownership or management will be too concerned about what writers write. I bet a hypothetical team put together and run by a vast majority of hockey writers would be a league doormat

As for the fans...their anger and rage will last only up until the Isles' next move. If Lou pulls off a trade or otherwise builds a team worth getting excited about in the summer, no one will be complaining about what was or wasn't done at the 2019 trade deadline.

All that said...I do expect a lot to be done this offseason. I know it was said a lot before this season, but 2018-19 was about Lou seeing what he had. Now it's time to see decisions made at the draft and over the summer.

He needs to get it done in July period. There’s no two ways about it we’ll have a ton of holes and a ton of cap space along with knowing we’ll have a good amount of great prospects in the pipeline. I can’t remember having a team more primed to make a splash in free agency I’m a very long time.

Exactly Cpt! Lou has had plenty of rest in terms of not making many moves these last few years. He needs to come out firing this offseason. No excuses or the Wolfpack will be back.

Well said. I do, however, believe there were some great upper mid level players that could have added some punch - and didn’t cost significant futures. Mainly Nyquist, Johansson and possibly Hagelin to name a few. Maybe Lou targeted these guys and wasn’t successful, who knows. But right about now any one of those three could be useful imo. -streaks
