We better enjoy the playoffs because who knows about the draft and FA.
- ses111

Well that’s the thing. You never know. You like a player you go for it they may not make it to FA.

Of course. Everyone needs picks if players walk. Just pointing out the reasoning for acquiring a player with a couple first round picks and people’s general “no (frank)ing way” attitude when it comes up. I don’t think it’s always so clear cut and dry. That was my point.

Gotcha.

Exactly Cpt! Regardless of what the Isles do in the playoffs and after this deadline, I'm having my confidence at 0 for the draft and FA. I was hoping Lou and Barry have real pull in being able to attract top players and that may or may not be the case?

Give it some time. I don’t think there’s really a right answer the way things should have went down today. I think we all agree we needed some top 6 scoring help but it didn’t happen because he didn’t want give up what it took to get it done. Bottom line.

That may come back to haunt us or maybe this team will get their shat back together and kick arse? That’s the main thing this team when it was playing well(because no matter how much anyone tries to doll it up they are NOT playing well recently)can beat any team in the league.

Whether they can regain that form remains to be seen and ultimately that is what Lou will be judged on by the masses as far as this deadline is concerned. If this team nose dives the rest of the season makes the playoffs and gets its nuts kicked in most will look back to the trade deadline and how nothing was done.

I think Lou did not make any trades with the Leafs at last year's deadline either. What a slacker. What happened to the GM who fired the coach before the playoffs. I just hope no deadline deals works out better for the Isles then it did for the Leafs. I get the disappointment though. You are on HB with Isles fans buddies and it's deadline day so you would like to see some moves. It's done now so we move on and if Isles are out in the first round we get to blast the Benny Hill theme and rant against Lou.

Like I said I don’t think standing pat was necessarily the wrong move and I don’t think making a trade would’ve been either.

You are nicer than me Cpt. Two straight no trades on deadline day is borderline criminal no wonder the Leafs ran Lou out of town.

The plan all along was to have a competitive team moving into Belmont.
I really want to see this team with a top 4 on defense of Pulock, Toews, Dobson and Wilde...

I think that’s the assumed plan by a lot on here. Nobody knows what their plan is let alone any of us. I’m sure they wanted a competitive team as soon as humanly possible. I really don’t think anything Lou did or should I say didn’t do today had anything to do with Belmont.

Any chance kuhnhackl is off Barzal’s line and does anyone here think that’s a good idea for them to play together?

No but some won’t say it. Maybe it was a lesson to Barzal? His line mates who were playing like crap also? Who knows but I can’t imagine anyone is hoping, looking forward, or anything along those lines of seeing that same line up again. Hopefully this team is recharged knowing that they’re all in it for the long haul and we see something we haven’t for a little while.
We’re not going to continue to get by or go too far if we’re only depending on cizikas and our goaltenders.

It was indeed a lesson and exactly what lou does. The result was we won 4-0. We all know Barzal is an special player but you can’t be a double digit minus player on a 1st place team when almost every other player is double digit positive. Barzal needs to be our best player, and 100% right. The Barzal line has been one of worst performing line regardless of who his wings are.

“You always have to think of the future and the present, and we’re in a ‘foundation situation’ of an organization,” Lamoriello said. “We’re trying to get ourselves in a span of winning over a number of years. And I’d like to think that’s the position we’re in right now and that’s what we’re trying to build.”

Barzal deserves all of the criticism thrown at him 100%. He has not been good but the same could be said for any number of players on this team outside of cizikas, Pulock, toews, and our goaltenders. Literally the rest of the team has been inconsistent, and at times lost on the ice. Seems to be an almost team wide thing lately. I think(hope) it’s just a rut that all teams endure every season and it’ll work itself out.

It certainly sounds like Lou's number 1 target was Duchene and his number 2 was Stone. He did not really care on the rest either b/c he did not want them or the price was too high. (all speculation by me of course but that seems to be the consensus)

I will say the fact that he did not make a trade just to make a trade is the one thing I liked yesterday. We did not get a Quine, Prince, etc. type player that would have to play and take other young guy's spot.

I like Beau a lot... I am very happy he is still on this team. We could end up signing a big fish this summer and be the one team that kept all our guys. If we offered Beau and a first for Duchene I am glad they passed.

The Dobson for Stone is another story. Only b/c it involved him signing an extension. I hope that Ottawa chose the other option rather than Lou would not offer it. I think Brannstorm is a better prospect than Dobson at this point but not by much.

If nothing else hopefully this is just another thing to keep these guys playing so well... "we rewarded you for playing so well together by keeping all of you here.. show us we were right."

True but the one thing you can't question with Barzal is the effort. I love that He is 100% every shift. Casey is same way.

I think the question is would you be ok with a signed Stone for Dobson and a 1st which was reportedly what Dorion wanted and Lou rejected? The more I think about it the more I think I would’ve done it.

Effort is always there kid doesn’t take a shift off. It seems he just needs to focus.

It's what every club strives for but some mortgage the future for the now. Look at CBJ & SJ. They're both all in for the now. There are several teams that have given away draft picks and prospects in an effort to win now. I think Pittsburgh falls into this category too. I know that their core is getting up there in age and what do they have in the pipeline? Yes they have won a couple cups so it's worked out but that window is going to close pretty soon. And when it does, i think it's going to slam shut and the end result will be ugly.
I'm fine with Lou not doing anything yesterday. Obviously the asking price was too steep for him. Now we a team that's in first place, lots of draft picks, a pretty well-stocked pipeline and cap space to make long-term moves. Such as signing our own UFA's, RFA's and hitting the FA market on July 1st.

I think this year was always going to be a one-and-done experiment where the group on the ice either sinks or swims, and I don't think anyone, including Lou and Trotz, thought it would swim quite this good. The team is kind of constructed to be sellers with all the pending FAs and the low expectations, but played themselves into a position to be buyers.

If you look at expiring contracts, the team's going to need an entire second line, a third-line center, and a starting goalie by next season...whether that's addressed by re-signing current players, bringing in new players, or both. I feel like burning assets on rentals on top of that would have put them in a worse position for the offseason and created a lot more work as far as building something worthwhile here.

The only move that happened yesterday that seems like a lost opportunity is Stone because he immediately signed a long deal with the team that traded for him. But we have no idea if he would have signed here that quickly, or at all.

I had this terrible nightmare last night that Lou did nothing at the deadline, either because he felt there was no one better than Moose Knuckle for our top 6, or because the team was so hopeless that no move would help it in the playoffs.

So who'd we pick up yesterday?

To answer your question... Yes, i would be ok with it. Stone is a legit top 30 forward in NHL that has a great 2 way game. I would have LOVED him on this team.

Or...was Dorion willing to take either deal but Stone decided he'd sign the extension with Vegas over the Isles. We really have no idea.
