"Trading for Kovalchuk is one thing, but once you get him you need to sign him" .
Wrong once you get him he will be signed already devils can not trade his rights only can trade him after he is signed to a contract

Why would the devils care about trading him within the same division unless they were trading away current key players from their roster for him? I don't see them doing that.. I'd like to bet that a kovalchuk trade requires a high draft pick and it's done. The whole point of the jackets trading for him would be to not send away roster players, so trading within the metro shouldn't matter at all.

Once they get Wennberg signed they could put David Clarkson on the LTIR giving them the space they would need to sign Kovalchuk.


Once again you are wrong. Clarkson can only be placed on LTIR after the season starts. His salary stays on the cap in the off season
