Yeah... I don't see how you couldn't get him to sign a deal similar to the one that Jake signed for at the most.

I think the money is fine. But that is a lot of term to give to a guy after one season.

I liked his game for the most part this year though. Hopefully he gets even better.

Thing is, if we sign him for 3 years, and he plays well, he’d probably be looking 6Mx7 year deal on his next contract.

They can buy him out after the next lockout happens, no worries.

At 26, he could still get better next year.

And with the contract ending at 33, there’s not a lot of risk of a steep age related decline.

Yeah a lot of risk/reward. It just worries me after a concussion. Kind of like liles a couple years ago.

Bump from last thread:
We all know they want to lock him up long term for a contract that will be considered a steal in 2-3 yrs hopefully everything goes well for him. I liked his game for most of the season given it was his first NHL season on small ice vs. better competition etc etc.

Obviously a different player in the playoffs after that concussion but hopefully he has a big year next season.

If he continues to play well and progress his dollar figures after a 2-3 bridge deal would be much higher. He is a good player on an OK contract today but in a year or two that deal could look like a steal or.... terrible if he somehow plays worse than his first NHL season.

High risk high reward I think its the right move given our teams D structure, he plays big minutes.

I’m not sure if it’s high risk though. Signing a johnny boychuk at 32 to a 7-year deal is high risk. His play is almost certain to drop off.

Medium risk is what I’d call it.

It's not that bad of a contract.... but comitting 7 years to a player you've seen play one season in the NHL is a little risky.

Still, he's already an important part of a defensive corps that needs all the help it can get.
