Wouldn't be a Garth blog w/o trying to trade Kane.

Also, Carolina isn't moving Hanifin.

That is a trade I was will to execute at or before the March 1 NHL trade deadline

Makes sense.

BTW you aren't getting Hanifan for Kane so stop dreaming.

Hanifin is a bottom/second pairing defender who is struggling (currently). He has all the tools and pedigree to be a top pairing defenseman but it most likely will not be for a few years yet. I feel he will get there and play on the top pairings but i don't see him being the "guy" on the top pairing ever.

Kane for Hanifin makes buffalo worse next year. Considerably. Trouba. That's what you need to pursue. How? Nylander and a first. They may want a defenseman but that may get it done regardless.

Jack - Orielly are some damn good centers. Kane - Okp - Sam are some high end wingers.

Hopefully Okposo is is able to return but if this is a career ruining illness then those dollars may land you a shattenkirk. Which makes trading nylander not a needed option.

Risto - Shatty - Mcabe - Guhle could be the top four for a long time.

Hannifan was selected 5th overall in 2015. He's 20 years old and has the potential to be a #1 D man in the league.

Evander Kane was selected 4th overall in 2009. He'll be 26 years old this summer. He's an enigmatic winger who has never lived up to his potential having only reached the 30 goal mark once in his career. He also has had legal issues. He is also a FREE AGENT after next year.

The Sabres should keep Kane and hope that he grows up and stays healthy. He's a good player who will never get fair return in trade due to his past issues. Carolina may seek to trade one of their young D men for Offensive help, but it would only be for a younger, less problematic forward

The Sabres need to stop trading and signing stop gap free agents. They need to draft and develop.

Checks stats, sees has 27 goals, chuckles softly. And if Hanifin has #1 defender written on him then why has Slavin surpassed him already?

Please read carefully...

He has the potential to be a #1 D in the NHL
27 goals is three goals short of 30. 10% short
Kane has never played a full NHL season. Never
Kane has been far from a model citizen

If Kane is such a great player, why are so many folks in Buffalo looking to trade him? Why? Because of the three reasons a state above.

Actually most people in Buffalo want to work out an extension this offseason. It's Garth that wants to trade him for a good defender and he has a point. We have a glutton of forwards and no good defenders outside McCabe and Risto...that's the only reason for the trade. If we didn't have so many glaring holes on defense he'd simply be a keeper.

Oh and Kane played all 48 games in the shortened season btw.

It amazes me at the impatience of hockey fans everywhere, if a player doesn't win rookie of the year or MVP right out of the gate the fans of said team are ready to write that player off as a flop and want to move on to the next new toy.
I would guess given a little bit of time, Noah Hanifin is going to be a very good Hockey player for a long time, defense has to be the hardest position in any sport to transition to the pro game from the lower leagues. I don't have a problem with Kane and his injury history, most of his injuries come from playing at 110 miles an hour, I don't buy the notion that he is not a team player or that he is selfish, he has been bounced around the lineup this year and never heard so much as a complaint about it, he just keeps playing. I also don't believe for one second that Murray is going to trade Nylander for defensive help.

Still on the trade Evander Kane wagon I see. tsk tsk

Hmmm if I were Bowman who would I trade Kane or Toews?
If I were Shanny who'd be gone, Matthews or Mariner?
If I were Chevy would it be Laine or Mark Scheifele?

Do you get the point?

Let's not include me in that ill, novice thinking of NHL hockey.

# 1 You don't trade for Kane then dump him for a loss.

#2More important! Like their NFL counterparts G.M.'s are responsible for bringing in the dollars by puzzling together enough players who mesh right and can compete every night and be a contender.
The bottom line is wins and Evander Kane gives you a greater chance to win with him than to win without him.
Evander has size, speed, skill, hockey intelligence and a deadly shot that finds the twine. You don't give that experience away until you know what you have to replace him with.

Oh! did I mention he's also a brahma bull in a china shop?

#3 We all knew when we were heavy on defense and light on the top 6 we'd have to give to get. It's a never ending cycle that only slows down through draft and development.

Actually, most Sabres fans were desiring to trade Kane in July through November.
Then, he turned into one of the top 5 5v5 goal scorers in the league...which resulted in many fans wanting to keep him while praying he stays out of trouble off the ice.
At the same time, there are teams who need top 6 help, especially 5v5 who may have a spare D to trade...a hockey trade they call it.
But I guess my crystal ball isn't as clear as your Mr NHL GM (right! Fanboy)

Jesus h Christ.

So this kid is already a 'through and through ' NHL player, ready to contribute to the top 4 on the Sabres?

Everyone over rates their own players but this is ridiculous. No wonder you Sabres fans are so dissapointed.
