Huet better than Mason ?

Keep him depending on the price.

If the price is similar to what Biship could fetch, go after Bishop

I see an abundance of nonsense in a lot of these blogs....mostly the fan comments but dude... "And Huet was probably a better goaltender. " smh

All due respect to anyone who disagrees, but Mason is an elite goaltender and there is proof. You also get 8 years worth of shot data to judge a goalie on that you get for every year of a skater, so it's reasonable to think that goalie stats are even more solid than normal advanced stats. Up to 8 x stronger, like Bounty basically.

He's struggling this year for whatever reason. In 14/15 he was very good.

career .911 save percentage...he's not a bad goalie but he's not elite.

most of the charts on dispelling voodoo only go back to 2013 so if thats your only reference you are ignoring all his years in cbus.

With all due respect, have you ever watched Mason play? Or just looked at his stats? I'm guessing it's the latter, because if you've watched him play, you would not consider him an elite goalie like you're making him out to be.

Very true. His first 2 years in Philly were both good, this year not so much. So he's the norm when considering goaltenders. Only the great ones do it every year.

Look elsewhere.

Steve Mason is a nice kid, with a good attitude, who works hard. So was Cristobal Huet. And Huet was probably a better goaltender.

Mason, like Huet and a lot of similar goalies, can get in a good groove and put some extended solid play together. But he has long periods where he can't stop a beach ball. The goal in the NHL is to win the Stanley Cup, and you need a goaltender who can either get you there or at least won't hold you back. The Flyers have some of the pieces to build around. Mason is way too unreliable and inconsistent to be one of them.

Seems to play better when taking on the higher workload. His play right now shows what hes capable of. I would be surprised if they didn't resign him

He's the best starter we've had in a long long time. If one of the kids can eventually surpass him as a #1 great, but no need to blow big money on Bishop or anyone else this summer. I would be happy going into next year with Mase/Stolie.

Have to re-sign him. Whether you think he's elite or average, who will be goalie if not him? Giroux can't do it. Voracek can't do it. I highly doubt Simmons is up for the task. Teams need a goalie to be successful.

Mason is far from immune to bad stretches and let in a terrible playoff goal mirroring those let in by bums Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy. Clearly AHL back-ups performance levels.

That said, since he arrived in Philadelphia in 12/13, he has posted some of the best numbers in the NHL, and is often the reason the team won that the reason they lost. He's not flashy, and he gets knocked because of his post-rookie year in Columbus. However, since arriving in Philadelphia, he has thrived, especially when he's been given the majority of starts. His worst strings have come when it's been a split-starter mentality. Assuming Neuvirth is not retained for next year, I would assume his play and numbers would continue in the trend they have been for the better part of 3 1/2 years.

Lastly, we've seen Stanley Cups won where the goalie plays slightly above average and, in one case, actually gets benched for the better part of a series. Not saying the Flyers have a roster that can win a Cup without a Super Human Mason, but it also doesn't mean that he has to be elite in order to be a winner.

I am amazed at some of the ill comments on Mason, He has been a steady force since coming to Philly, We have had some lacking goalies over the years and some flash in the pans but Mase has been good for a duration now, If we had him for the cup run against Chicago and he was playing as he has since he came to Philly we would likely have cup 3.
