Length is the issue. 3-4 years wouldn't be too bad. 7 though? I seriously doubt this will be a good contract for a physical forward this age with limited production history.

I don't love the length of the deal and agree that his best years are less and less likely as it goes, but the Wings are making this move with other considerations in mind. Him being a local boy, and his history at Michigan State are definitely factors that the Wings have been playing up to their fan base - not only for him, but DeKeyser and Larkin too.

I regret giving such a thoughtful and measured response. This really is a horrible deal.

Hotstove: Is Abdelkader Worth The Extension He Signed With the Red Wings?

The obvious and only answer to this question is a resounding no. The debate at this point is basically between "this contract is horrible" and "this contract isn't that bad."

Personally I think it's horrible. It has the potential to work out to fair value if Abdelkader repeats last year's season eight more times in a row. I'm not holding my breath.

although many may say the amount we paid him is simply to much,

i have 0 problem with him making 4 million a year,

But im still team bad deal on this, its 7 years, its way tooooo long, like 3 years too long, what are the chances after year 3, 4, 5 hes still worth anything let alone 4 million?

I actually feel bad nay saying, cause i love abdelkader, im very happy we have him, a home town kid, MSU guy, hard working good character guy, im sure a presence in the locker room, and he produces!

but 7 years for almost any player is too long nowadays let alone someone whos extremely physical one

the last 2-3 years of this deal he will be exiting his prime years.

at least Franzens cap will be a Pronger/Savard situation

Definitely don't love this contract. Way too long. Unfortunately, players his age want security and career contracts so I doubt he would have accepted a 3 or 4 year deal unless the dollars were crazy. He knows this was going to be his "money contract" and coming off a career year, you kinda saw it coming. Detroit's only options were sign him or let him go and then sign a UFA or bring up another young guy. They decided to keep him at a premium, so I guess we're getting 7 more years of Abbie.

Yeah its a few too many years. If the salary went lower near the back end of it, it would have been OK. Something like 4-4-4-4-3-2-2. All you have to do is look at the history of my beloved Leafs to know it was a bad idea... Clarkson... and every other contract out there...

Abdelkader has scored 20 goals once. his next highest total? 10!
he got those career high of 23 by playing with Datsyuk. a monkey could get 20 skating on Datsyuks line. Holland messed up on this.

where had Abdelkader been the past 13 games? hasn done jack

im scared on what he gives helm

I never said I liked the deal. I don't. I just implied that were stuck with it now so we might as well just make the best of it. I am definitely concerned about the new contracts especially for the three you mention. However, I'm sure Franzen is done, Richards probably won't be back, ditto for Quincey, and Howard may or may not be moved. I'm not convinced Helm resigns here either.

Go look at the cap numbers for next year then complain, they'll be able to resign the guys they want.
