The way they played last night made it seem that way.

I'm only repeating what I've been hearing on talk radio in Ottawa and toronto (Sid & Tim) and the "one line team" point keeps coming up.

Leaves us to cheer for a whole bunch of wins, goals by the entire team, and playoffs to look forward to. And Karlsson is a Norris trophy winning defenseman, so whine all you like, you're not even convincing yourself.

Well Karlsson did not have a good game last night, of the six Giveaways committed by the Senators he was credited with 3 of them, with one fanned pass that ended up on a Bruin's stick that found it's way behind Lehner. Oh and he was a minus 4 last night too.

It's something that he has to work on, and part of it is the rotating defensive partners he been having over the first part of this season. Once he has a steady (see Methot) partner things will improve.

For all the heat Brian Burke took in his comments, which were supposed to be behind closed doors, something pretty important was overlooked.

I like where the Leafs are so far in comparison to last season.. not great but improved and a step in the right direction

Don't know if you're been watching the Senators games, but if you have, you would have to agree they too have improved in many areas, that were clearly weaknesses last year.

They still are giving up too many shots per game, but "scoring chances" against are down, from where they were last year. The PP is now less predictable and the PP% is better (only 12 games though) than last year, and the PK% is a lot better, again it's early in the season but are good indications of improvements over last year.


All this being said...............both Ontario teams will need some luck, and not lose any key players to long term injury, to grab a wild card spot.


Ottawa has also announced that along with Lazar, both Hoffman and Stone are going to be staying with the NHL club this season (all three Ottawa draft picks) and to get themselves a permanent residence in the Nations Capital.

Have heard the Coach interviewed numerous times over the past couple of weeks, and this is what he's saying. There must be some truth to it, otherwise the local media would be all over him if not.

Also, if you've seen a number of their games, you'd be seeing what I've been seeing and comparing the team's play over last year.

So far the results are indicating that in the standings, and some of the key team stats, that I mentioned.

Watching the highlights this morning I see three very skilled plays resulting in three goals, so seeing how the NHL awards points to wins, I'd say the Senators are on the right track, and the point you make about whether or not they can keep it up will be answered by mid December.

Anderson's SV% is ridiculous right now. If Ottawa continues to get outshot like this and Anderson becomes human (~.920 SV%) they're in trouble. I'd guess that they will improve their possession game which should help offset things when Anderson's numbers normalize though. They'll probably be fighting for a wild card spot all year.

Don't forget that Lehner is no slouch, and his play is much improved over last year too.

Goal tending is the least of Ottawa's concern, and the defence corp has been playing to expectations, no doubt helping the improvements we've seen in the goal-tending to point.

Where I see a need for improvement is in scoring from the forwards, as the hole created with the removal of a carrear PPG player like Spezza will need to be filled. He was also their best FO Centre and that too needs improvement.


Again, as I've said time and time again, since before the beginning of the season, they will, at best, be in the hunt for a WC spot at the end of the year..............however, in about five weeks from now, and they are at, or near their current P%......I might change my mind about that.

because a coach says something does not make it true ..at all
the leafs coaches last season talked all the time about scoring chances and shot quality. they had their own internal tracking for these.. which proved to be useless

You know as well as I do that the ON ICE officials do not have the benefit of replay.

Three goals were scored last night that were waved off, and if (as in the NFL) there was a "Coach's Challenge" in the NHL, all three of those waved off goals would have been overturned, in my opinion.
