there is no chance that edmonton would trade yakupov for boychuk..........that would be viewed almost instanty as one of the worst trades in NHL history.

not even sure what the bruins could add to make it happen......their 1st wouldn't be enough.

a couple of interesting thoughts on Methot.

- first when I think of him, the first things that comes to mind is, good pairing with EK, he should be resigned....
- he was just on the outside looking in as a member of the olympic team
- I also think he would make a good Captain for the team until one of te younger guys establishes himself as the next long term Captain

that said from another perspective.....

- Coach MacLean is wayyyy smarter than me and he chose to sit Methot a few games last season - does he see something I missed??
- Is Mathot a second coming of Kuba?? A guy that looks really good beside EK, but only because he's playing with EK??

I still think Ottawa should try to extend him - IF the price is right

That's an interesting chart for Methot. If I'm reading it correctly, it demonstrates that he is better at deterring close shots relative to the rest of the team. Let's remember who the rest of the team is, and how poorly they played defensive hockey last year. Cowen, Phillips were horrific. Ceci, Gryba weren't much better, but improved late. That leaves Wiercioch and EK. It's long been understood that Methot is the team's 2nd or 3rd best defenseman, but I'd be more interested in how he compares to other top 4 defenders when talking about a contract extension.

What would be our best tools to make that evaluation?

I don't know how seriously he was in the mix on the CDN olympic team, but at least he was in the conversation.

From what I hear, he's a great locker room guy. Solid team mate that would probably be a good captain. Again, here, it seems to be a numbers issue - I still think EK should lead the team down the line, with support from guys like Turris and Methot.

As far as the second coming of Kuba, I don't really care if that's all he is. Crosby has Kunitz and if EK makes Methot look good, i'm happy with it.

Serious question: what do you think is the right price? I agree with everything you said, but I can't decide upon a fair price for someone like him (and I think I'd rate him as somewhere between 'Decent' and 'Solid', if that makes any sense).

Yakupov is better, but also I think hes overrated... hes got the pooptiest attitude in a player.. So yeah, if the sens would trade for boychuck, I wouldn't think I would trade someone like Zibanijad for Boychuck. HOwever, teams are more likely to pay less or to be less likely to trade when you have a player that has attitude problems.

IMO Methot is probably worth around the range of 4.00M$-4.75M$. I wouldn't pay him more than 5M$ guaranteed.

If Boston traded Kessel and Sequin because of their attitudes there is no way they trade for Yakupov - teams with player standards like the Bruins don't go out and get players like Yakupov, they trade them to people like Brian Burke.

And that's no problem for Edmonton. Yakupov's spent more of his time in Edmonton, working out and preparing for the season, than any oiler, and any of the young guys we've drafted since 07. If this is him with an attitude problem, then Oil fans are fine with it.

I never understood why he got the "attitude" label in the first place.

is it cuz he celebrated a little too much on his first goal?

is it because he said he wanted a bigger role/minutes on the team.

to me, that seems like a guy who wants to play, and wants to contribute. Attitude problems are the guys getting in poop off the ice, or publically criticizing teammates or coaches. i've never heard anything like that about him.

i honestly think that because of the so-called "russian factor", every little thing he does that is even a little negative, will be blown out of proportion 1000 times worse than if he had been Canadian or American.

it's pretty sad if you ask me. the kid has been labelled, and has done nothing to deserve it.

Didn't boston try resigning Kessel but couldn't afford him? I could be wrong.

See, I would say the same thing ... yet I feel like this is too reasonable to be realistic. Seems like he's angling for an overpay.

No, I'm fine with the list. For most of the world Turris played behind Spezza. They are not remotely familiar with the quality of his play. Not unsimilar to the young Bergeron playing behind Thornton. My hope is that the rest of the league will begin to discover just how good a player Turris has become.

I see Turris logging a lot of ice time with MacArthur and Karlsson. MacLean will experiment to try and find the other 2 that fit on a five man unit. But I expect this group will play head to head with other top units. They will be very good.

If Turris is to be considered a top 15 NHL center by the media, he needs to lead the Senators to team success.

I hope I am wrong, but I think the decision to move Methot has already been made. Murray will not pay $5m for a stay at home Dman. Methot can get better than $5m on the open market. But he should net a good return in a trade (now or at the deadline).

Well you should make that trade in a heart beat. Oilers are in a similar situation as the Senators...they need to build up their defense. Trading for a veteran D is the most effective way is to trade for a top 4 D with experience. Boychuck could organize most of the defense on ice immediately, however, the oilers coaching staff kept on trying to fix it themselves for years and amounted to nothing. Let a veteran come in and truly help organize the defense. Don't forget Boychuck has been developed by Bruins, a much more competitive team than the Oilers. That fact alone, should be enough to convince you that Boychuck is worth Yakupov, especially in today's hockey market for top four D's.

People are so insistent on over selling Turris. He hasn't put up number one center points yet, so lets not start calling him a top 15 center yet.

I say this as a huge turris fan.

Not so sure Boychuk walks in Edmonton & fixes the back end.. Didnt the Oil try this last summer with Andrew Ference (Ex veteran D Man from Boston)

This statement right here just takes all of your credibility away instantly.

Yakupov is well liked and is one of the hardest workers on the team. 1st on the ice last off type. He struggled learning a different d system last season. But has never had an attitude problem.
