Do any Wings blogs sell women's shirts that say "Do you like my Tatar Tots?"

Dibs, if there isn't one.

I mean Snow hasn't come out and said it publicly but I think it's pretty damn safe to assume we are. We have 16 forwards signed right now. I wouldn't be shocked to see him here at the start of the season but I think Snow is definitely entertaining the idea. He's run his course on the Island.

The question is, what is he worth?

I've posted something like this a couple times, so apologies if you've read it before. But let's just say Mantha has a fantastic camp and makes the team (unlikely considering Ken Holland, but let's play along anyway). What could we expect out of him at the NHL level?

We can estimate this by looking at a list of former players who jumped straight from juniors to the NHL, seeing how their junior scoring totals compared to their NHL rookie season scoring totals, and then applying the results to Mantha.

History suggests 19-year-old juniors jumping straight to the NHL are very likely to see their scoring rates in their NHL rookie season fall somewhere between 15% and 40% of what they put up in their final year of juniors, with the average falling around 25% to 30%. For Mantha that roughly projects as follows:

15% (low expectation): about .3 points per game, or about 25 points per 82 games. Third or fourth line numbers.

25%-30% (medium expectation): about .5 to .6 points per game, or 40-something points per 82 games. Solid if unspectacular top-six numbers.

40% (high expectation): about .8 points per game, or about 65 points per 82 games. Solid first-line numbers

To be fair, you could argue that there is some bias in the data. It only looks at 19-year-old kids who jumped straight from juniors to the NHL, which is only a fraction of junior players -- most go to the minor leagues first. If we assume that any junior player who jumps straight to the NHL must both (1) be an elite junior player and (2) already possess a "pro-style" game that requires little adaptation to be successful in the NHL, then this metric might not be a fair tool to project Mantha, especially if he has some flaws in his game that will need to be worked out in order to be successful against professionals.

That said, the numbers are encouraging. Probably Mantha will start in Grand Rapids, but if he starts tearing up the AHL (let's say at least a point per game or a little under) in the first few months of the season I think he ought to get a callup pretty quickly.

I don't know...probably not an impact player right now.

On the plus side, there's a lot of teams that would take him from a talent standpoint. The down side is a lot of teams might see him as overpaid at $3.3/year.

I genuinely think he may have more success after a change of scenery. When his game is dialed in, he's freakin awesome. He really is. But the problem is that he'll go through a 10-game hot streak and then disappear for 30. If he could go to a club that can help him focus and keep his head on straight, he could end up being a steal pick-up.

Are you saying my "Luke Glendening is A Good Young Player With A Real Future in this League" T-shirt isn't good enough to get me past security?

I picked mine out of the trash. I think it used to be Jim Nill's before he went to Dallas.
