Matt Henderson: Paying Justin Schultz

And to think we just went through a lockout because of these type players and their ELC. Now you think Jultz is worth 4.5 because of similar stats from 10-20 years ago??? Oh dear god help us all

The most I give him is the cap hit on his current contract (3.75mill).

I assume that's the most he'd want at that cap hit, so yeah.

He is a defensive liability. His offensive numbers haven't really been outstanding either. So why sign him at all? What does he bring to the table? Potential? I'm sick of potential so I say we should just let Ekbland and nurse take his minutes rather than pay him 4.5 plus for potential.

wouldn't you consider playing ekblad and nurse is just as much as for potential? neither kid has any proven nhl track record.

Before you get verabally eviscerated:

1.) He's the only Dman on the team that's able to break the puck out with any consistency.

2.) He brings potential of being an elite offensive Dman. You just don't let those types of players go. EVER.

3.) He's capable of AT LEAST playing top-4 minutes.

You can feel free to be frustrated and to hate management, coaches, and the players' seeming apathy, but don't say stupid things.

"Just you wait, his potential is through the roof" is what has been drilled into our brains for years unfortunately.

He's minus 17 - give him the league minimum until he learns to play defence. Second coming of Mike Green is what he is.

And that would be fine if we had someone else on this team that could consistently cover defense and provide some shelter for him.

If we pay him 4.5 we might as well join in on making fun of us. He's nowhere near worth 4.5 million.

Just read this on the Oilers website's summary of the ANA Vs. EDM game recap and thought I'd share.

*WARNING: If you're low on brain cells, DO NOT read this as you'll be at risk to lose all that you've got left*

"Mike finally someone else got it right. Thank goodness. It is Taylor Hall and Taylor Hall alone who has ruined this team. He can't skate, so he wears speed skates which means he can't do anything in the corners without falling down, his stick is way too long which means he can't work the puck close to his feet, he only passes when he is in trouble , he is useless on the backcheck, useless in his own end and I can go on and on . Remember anyone can score goals. Ebs the only player being considered for the team Canada and where was he ? scratched. Can you believe that ? Right on Mike."

Voynov paid his dues in the AHL and also had two impressive playoff runs under his belt before earning his contract. Oilers would be wise to play hardball with Schultz and maybe start paying players on shorter contracts based on results instead of long term deals based on potential. Regular season numbers are pretty identical but Voynov is very solid in his own end and has yet to see regular first unit pp time in his time in LA. Basically Voynovs better.

Also we need to realize PKs bridge contract was back ended and signed coming out of lockout so the first yr of the two yr deal was simply used to lower his cap hit. Oilers would be wise to spend money from increased cap hit on some proven vets who could solidify the D and lower lines

Great points but you know that the Schultz Camp is going to be using the Voynov deal as the starting point in negotiations. I also agree that he is a more complete defender right now.

They wouldn't be north of a 4.5 million dollar cap hit.

1. I agree
2. Normally I would agree but in my opinion his defence liability far exceeded offensive numbers.
3.Capable of playing top minutes on the worst team in the west isn't exactly a great accomplishment.

With that money kind of $$$ we might be able to sign players who are NHL quality or if we want to go to rebuild year 9 let someone else we drafted get there shot.
