An interesting, thoughtful, and timely blog Stewy. I agree that it would be a good idea to work some experienced European officials in to the NHL staff, especially with the retirement of so many veteran NHL refs in recent years. The question is would and could the league make it be economically feasible for them to bring their families over with them during their transition period working AHL games to learn the North American game and thereafter. Such officials would clearly also have to highly fluent in English as well. Perhaps if the NHL were to expand to having some European based teams (a longshot still at this time I would think with North American cities such as Seattle, Quebec City, Kansas City, Portland, Hamilton, etc potentially looking for new NHL teams as well) it would be easier to integrate non-North American officials in the NHL. As you point out, however, adding European officials would clearly require a greater commitment on the part of the NHL then it did with the Vinnerborg experiment to make it a success.

I find it rather odd/interesting that the NHL does not search for the best referees as it does the best players. The NHL is trying to make this a global game, the best of the best players, why not get the best of the best officials? Many American referees get looked over, and as you pointed out the way they handled Vinnerborg was worse than getting looked over. They did set him up to fail.

I don't see how a league could do that. Even when you first start out as a level 1 USA hockey ref they pair you up with a more experience official. It has happened at every level as you work your way up. If it weren't for many of the veteran officials that have helped me through the ranks I wouldn't have lasted. It's a shame the NHL didn't have the insight to do the same.

Good blog yet again Stewie, can't wait for the book!

As always Paul, I so appreciate your views and experience. However, I'm not so sure the experiment would work. European officials have had a lifetime of "conditioning" to very different style of game. Unless they have the time to come up through all the various minor leagues to be (for lack of a better term) reprogrammed to the North American style of game, I have my doubts about a successful integration. As it stands now, most players have a difficult time finding "consistency" from current officials. Remember how linesman Kevin Collins would break up every fight he could, before it started? I hated seeing him on the officials list for an NHL game. He had a bias, plain and simple. He was more suited to a college, or European league. Could European officials have a bias to a certain style of play, or players? Who knows? Even if they don't, I'm not sure it would "improve" the current game any. I'm not saying European officials are incapable, nor am I am I being "exclusionary". I'm only pointing out the differences of thought processes, and/or style. As I stated earlier, if they committed to understanding and adapting to the North American style, I say give them a shot!! EVERYONE deserves an EQUAL opportunity, just as long as we don't employ some kind an affirmative action program, and deprive young, qualified, North American officials of their shot. Judge everyone equally, and the game will continue to flourish.
