Paul Stewart: Tales from the End of the Bench

Great read! Hell of tilt with Jonathan. I hated the Nordiques but would love to see them get a team back. Did you enjoy the brief stint in QC?

Also must have been interesting playing for Senator Demers. He was something, I remember him getting called for tossing pennies on the ice to try and get a timeout, might have been when he was with STL.

Another great read. I am 56 years old and come from the old school and remember allot of this stuff. I think that we should do like they do in the bible and call this the old testament. Anything after Bettman should be regarded as new testament. I like old testament hockey much better.

Good read Stewie, a teammate of a young Mike Gartner, eh? I met him once at Rangers training camp in the early 90s, total class & obviously a great player too. I had a friend that had one of those old Cincinnati Stingers sweaters.

Another great piece Stewie, and I remember watching those goes in Boston live on TV in your first game with the Nordiques, as well as seeing in person your all-at-once face off with John Paddock, Jack McIlhargy, and Behn Wilson in Philadelphia on March 27, 1980, and of course your various tussles while you played with both the Binghamton Dusters in the NAHL and AHL (1975-79) and the AHL Philadelphia Firebirds (1978-79). (I also still have one of your old Firebird sticks.)

The NAHL Firebirds and Dusters in a typical bench clearer
at the Civic Center in Philadelphia in 1975-76.

Jack Carlson (who you went with in Hartford) had not only inspired one of the Hanson Brothers in SLAP SHOT but had actually originally been cast to play one of them along side his real life brothers Steve and Jeff Carlson. Jack had to pull out of the project, however, when he was called up from the NAHL Johnstown Jets to the WHA Minnesota Fighting Saints shortly before filming began in Johnstown in the spring of 1975 and was replaced by Dave "Killer" Hanson who was later one of those enforcers with the WHA Birmingham Bulls that you played against while with the Stingers. (Stewie also played against all three together in the NAHL when his Dusters faced the Jets.) By the way the apartment that was used as Charlestown Chief's player/coach Reggie Dunlop's (played by Paul Newman) was the real apartment in Johnstown that had been shared by Dave Hanson, Paul Holmgren, now GM of the Philadelphia Flyers, and current Anaheim Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau.

LOL not really, this book was published 29 years ago and is long out of print. I thought that Stewie would appreciate the picture and the Cooperalls that Clarkie is wearing.
