Ryan Wilson: Should Penguins Look to Another Former Canuck To Fill Cooke's Void? Should the Penguins look into signing Mason Raymond?

Raymond would be a very good option for the Pens. There just wasn't a fit for him in Vancouver anymore. I think he could definitely slot into the top 6/9 and be successful with the right linemates.

As far as free agents go he is a good option I think, his speed is perfect for Bylsma's system however his floating perimeter play is not. Saying that I would still give him a go because he is a skilled version of Tyler Kennedy

When comparing their offensive numbers you have to take something into consideration, Cooke's numbers are all bonus on top of everything else he's supposed to bring to the table.... Raymond's is SUPPOSED to provide scoring.... the fact that their scoring is so close is a knock on Raymond. At least Cooke will provide an aggressive forecheck and some "sandpaper", Raymond doesn't supply anything else.

Here's one instance where possession stats really paint the full picture. If you're looking for dump and chase plus perimeter shots, Raymond's your guy. When he's not providing offense, he's not helping your team. Cooke provides offense and more, as has been pointed out. If Raymond's not in your team's top six, he really shouldn't be in the lineup. When used in a bottom-six role, he's simply ineffective. The problem is that he's not consistent enough to warrant top-six ice time.

When talking about a 1 year stopgap, beggars can't be choosers. The Penguins have limited space to work with right now. Penguins have nothing in the farm system that can be used on the third line, and quite frankly I dont think Dustin Jeffrey is the answer for the Penguins 3rd line either.

I havent read anything that suggests the Penguins have interest in keeping him.

Depending on the price I think Raymond would be an excellent fit. Definitely worth kicking the tires.

He can flat out fly. But he is not physical at all.

I like Raymond, Gunner, but we need some more two-way play from our 3rd line. If we can't keep Morrow, Raymond could be a decent choice.....at the same time I feel like Mueller brings almost the same for half the price.

He wasn't necessarily the greatest but what else do we really have to make up for the loss of Cooke?

Just to be clear, this article only pertains to the UFA market. The more likely scenario is that the Penguins go the trade route to shore up the bottom 6.

how about a Raymond-Vitale-Harry Z line...? the speed would be scary... the lack of offensive skill would be scarier.

but like people have said, I'd be for morrow or getting someone via trade.

Would he come at a low enough cost to fit?

I read on another site that Morrow "won't be returning to Pittsburgh or Dallas". At this point why wouldn't RS at least kick the tires on Him?

What about Brunner from Detriot?
Ive liked what ive seen from him in a couple of Detriot games that ive watched. The problem is i think we need more of a physical presence on that 3rd line. What about Penner if we could get him 1.5-2 mil/ 1 year?

Agree that we need the physical presence, but Penner is not known for liking to "mix it up" despite his large size.

I was just thinking about something...

could losing Talbot be the reason MAF has been awful these past 2 playoffs? I mean, MAF and Talbot were probably the two closest teammates on the team and we really never replaced Talbot when he left...

I don't know, just a theory, could be reading into it too much.
