Posted this on the other thread after the new blog went up.

----------

It seems to me that advanced stats took off after "Moneyball" became popular.

If there's one sport where these stats *might* work, it's baseball. You have one hitter against one pitcher, and each man has a whole host of averages that describe his career/season.

The reason it comes close to working in baseball is because every play is clearly broken down to its smallest possible form. You can isolate, identify, and tinker with enough of the variables to give you an idea of how things will go.

The second you get into any sport with continuous play like hockey or even football, you have thousands (if not millions) of tiny variables.

These kind of stats may have some limited use in hockey assuming you could ever perfect them (HUGE assumption), but they'll never be as important as the raw numbers.

Leafs smoking that poll... I think the Leafs have some darkhorse players that will really shine in the playoffs when the games matter.. guys like McClement, Koma, even guys like MacA$$ will get serious finally instead of playing soft.. Kulemin, Grabo, Frattin, etc.. I think they will up their game.

It will be interesting...

I don't want 6th because I don't want the Caps in the first round, 2nd would be okay if we got the sens and not the Rangers. 7th if we get the Habs would be good. But I want 4th and I want the Habs first round!

Crazier things have happened Leafs pretty close to the Habs.. the Bruins would be a longshot...

Leafs haven't played great after long layoffs so tonights game with Tampa worries me more than the back to back with Florida considering once again Fl will be resting and waiting the Leafs who played the night before.

I personally think Bettman does that on purpose.. schedule tampering to help small market teams.

I am not a conspiracy theorist.. but it is funny how the Pens were about to move out then miraculously got Fleury, Malkin, Crosby, & Staal.

Leafs in 5... has been my prediction for half a season.. when the Habs were nearly the top team in the league.

I have a lot of respect for some of the die hard Habs fans.. but have little respect for the Dirty Midgets on the ice.. they never fooled me.. shortened season.. the pounding was going to take its toll.

Playoffs will only get harder.. they will crumple under the hard-hitting pressure.
