you could make that case...I think the entirety of the series made it as memorable, and the Paul Henderson goal best epitomized that...in my opinion

I was too young (two years old) to watch the Summit Series but I have seen all the games, watched the documentary, read up on it, etc. I don't think the impact of the series, both on Canadian and Russian hockey and the two countries as a whole, can be overstated.

It should also be noted that Canada played a two-game exhibition set against Sweden (which got quite intense and nasty in its own right) halfway through the Summit Series and then one game against Czechoslovakia (also pretty heated) after wrapping up the series against the USSR.

Here at HB, I blogged the other week about Bobby Clarke and the Summit Series, including the infamous ankle slash on Valeri Kharlamov:

great stuff! a must read. It is really interesting, even in watching this documentary, how important Bobby Clarke was in the Summit series...and ironic how less than two years later, as a member of the Broad Street Bullies, Clarke would be part of the team many in Canada were saying was killing the sport

i'm wondering Ek, as someone who grew up in Philly, an area that i razzed you on as you could not find hockey jerseys, who broadcasted that series for you to watch it?

I must say, that youtube video was really hard to follow. I was soo confused on game 5,6, & 7. I know Henderson scored a couple game winners, and that final one that was clear. Maybe if I watched the full documentary I could get the full gist of that Summit Series.

Think TSN had game 8 on the other day. Watched a bit, but not enough.

Did like the Canada Cup that TSN aired couple weeks back. Watching Messier/Gretzky/Lemieux was quite something.

I was driving with my dad and brother through northern Alberta listening to the game. We eventually had to pull over when we found a spot with decent reception. Every car we passed on the road after the game flashed lights, honked horns, etc. It was big

Can you imagine the amount of ridicule and chaos that would happen if someone did what Parise did and faked swinging his stick at the ref like that today?

He's be suspended for the season likely.

The series became important because the Russians kicked Canada's ass in the first few games when nobody expected it.

And that game also changed hockey in Russia and Europe forever. Suddenly, the players oversees realized they could play this game at a level high enough to matter. The NHL wasn't unobtainable for the Russians, the Swedes, the Fins, and the Czechs...
- Eklund

Ummm.....no.

The NHL was still very much unobtainable to the Russians and Czechs.

An iron curtain still stood between them and the NHL.

Everybody ready for a miracle Friday?
Even if both sides come to an agreement by this Sunday (which is extremely unlikely and I would be shocked if this were to happen) - but let's say they sign a new deal on Sunday. Is there still enough time to start the season on time? They would have time for what, a one week long camps? Is this even possible? Is this even legal? I hope somebody can educate me on this.

You could still get in an 82 game schedule, but it wouldn't start on October 11th.

But let's not worry too much about it - there isn't going to be an agreement any time soon.

You mean the competition the Soviets purposely tanked in hopes of circumventing a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics?

still think the 87 Canada Cup was the best hockey ever played with the 96 World Cup a pretty close 2nd.
