So I think Ryan would be a perfect addition to our team. I think if we could get him on the cheap he would be a phenomenal third line guy, even power play guy who sits in front of the net.

Top three UFA signing by the leafs in the past 15 years.

1. Curtis Joseph
2. Gary Roberts
3. Alexander Mogilny
4. Ed Belfour

Gary was 35 when he signed in Toronto and was amazing for us. I think Ryan Smyth would be a great under the radar acquisition and a replacement for the likes of Lombardi and Armstrong.

He will stay in Edmonton.

The stunt he pulled to go back to Edmonton should show you how much he loves it there. He's made enough $$$ during his career he wants to retire in Edmonton with family and friends nearby.

If he stays, great for Edmonton. I think he is a huge asset that isn't discussed nearly enought. Maybe it is because he is staying in Edmonton.

He loves edmonton so much that he wouldnt accept 75,000 less than what he was asking for the first time he left the Oilers...

That's not fact that's speculation. And he realized he missed it so much that he forced a trade a year before he was UFA.

He isn't going anywhere.

No chance in hell Smyth wants to go anywhere. His greed got the better of him and Edmonton called his bluff otherwise he would've been an Oiler for life. Now that he's back he's not going anywhere.

He's holding out for a lot of money in Edmonton. That doesn't show much.

Truth is, he wanted out in LA because he was due to be a third-liner and he wanted to have a big year in his UFA season for $.

Sorry but that's just not true.

He wants to be in Edmonton. Period.

That's why he would only play for Edmonton last year and will only play for Edmonton going forward.

I never saw this thread before.

Seriously? Ryan Smyth? What a terrible idea. There is absolutely zero use for him here.

I think your issue is not up front but rather your D. You cannot have Koska and Phaneuf playing the minutes they are.

Not to mention Carlyle's baffling move to take Phaneuf off his shooting side on the PP and put Kostka there, essentially rendering them both useless as Leaf fans have been witnessing.

Phaneuf can't hit the net no matter what side he's shooting from.

That's certainly what Clouts was claiming. I think they just put him on the back burner while they were figuring out Eberle and Hall's contracts.

Just ranked 2oth at MIT sloan conference. They presented a new player rating called Total Hockey Rating. Took the last two years of data and every on ice event. If you google it you can see the whole document. But yeah Ryan smyth is a joke.

Is there a list somewhere?? Smyth does some things great but if they have him rated a top 20 player at this point, it's to the detriment of their rating system.

It called Alex Steen the best player in the game the last 2 years, certainly some kinks to be worked out.

Speaking of resistance, NHL teams weren’t represented en masse, but hockey got its due. An academic paper was presented introducing THoR, an attempt at providing an NHL equivalent for football’s QBR or baseball’s WAR or basketball’s PER — advanced stats that condense a player’s value into a single number. There’ve been some giggles that the THoR formula, looking at two recent seasons, considers Alexander Steen the best player in the league. But the top 15 forwards also include most of the expected suspects, from Evgeni Malkin to Sidney Crosby to Jonathan Toews. So it’s worth further study, for sure.

I think the entire point is that Alex Steen may in fact the most productive forward in the NHL. Why is that such a crazy thought? I mean no he doesn't score like malkin but I bet he blocks 10 times more shots than him and is the first on the back check. I think stats are gonna start getting pretty awesome in the next few years.

Steen is a very fine player, but if he's the most productive player there is something wrong. a blocked shot isn't the same as a goal or an assist.

They have given the same value to a hit or PIM or faceoff or missed shot as a goal and an assist. That does not compute.

Tyler Kennedy and 39pts avg over last 2 years is 3rd??? And I'm supposed to buy this??

Their reasoning on crosby being so low is rather perplexing. He avg over 50pts in avg 30 games the last 2 years. But because he played so few games he's way down the list..... but their data is based on per game and crosby has more pts than the guy in 3rd place... oh and crosby also has more pts than Steen over the same time.

None of it makes much sense at all.
