Lack is not younger, he's two years older than Markstrom. See above comment I edited.

Just did...my bad Feels.like forever people have been talking about Markstrom

I looked it up and I don't think that's true.

According to the CBA a player is exempt for four seasons from his first pro contract or until he plays more than 72 NHL games.

Since Markstrome signed his first pro contract in for the 10/11 season he would have to start clearing waivers in the 14/15 season.

I think he's not waiver exempt as this is his fourth year from the year he signed his contract. His waiver exemption ended last season.

Can someone confirm this?

You're full of misinformation - Markstrom could have been claimed when they sent him down this year but thankfully he wasn't.
- LeftCoaster

From what I can see there is not longer a definition between waivers and re-entry waivers like ther used to be. Now it's just called 'Regular Waivers' no distinction between going to or being recalled.

Exactly.

"Regular Waivers - Regular waivers are the waivers teams use when they want to send a player to or from the minor leagues or bring a player in from another, usually European, league."

"To and from" it's not only on the way down but also on the way up. You have to clear waivers either way if you are not exempt.

Problem is you'd never get Markstrom past waivers. Would have to sign Markstrom and then trade Lack in the off season.

That trade scenario won't help the canucks this season.

You guys think Markstrom is as good as Lack right now?
- Gullzy

I think Markstrom is close to passing Lack. And I also think Markstrom may have more long term upside.

Markstrom was drafted 31st overall, so I'd say he's worth a 1st.

Lack was not drafted, but I'd put him as worth a 2nd rounder.

I hardly think a Lack/Kassian/+ deal is giving up the farm.

a) Lack and/or Markstrom has to go.
b) It is starting to appear Kassian is uncoachable and mngt are allmost ready to toss in the towel.
c) As long as the deal don't involve Virtanen, Shink, Horvat, Pedan, McCann, Demko, Jensen or Biega/Sanguinetti it ain't gonna hurt us.

- LordHumungous

Where's Cassels? Kid has the best numbers out of all those guys so far. No respect :p

who ever has the greatest return is the guy we deal. I can live with having either one of those guys as our backup

Franson we can sign when he turns UFA.

Lupul you can keep

Canucks might want Kadri

I now understand that the term 're-entry waivers' has been eliminated but does the term 'regular waivers' apply to players only going to the AHL and not coming up from the AHL?

If that's the case then I'm wrong but I haven't seen anything definitive.

I'll take your word for it.

Looks like I have some readin' to do... (frank)ing CBA.

Edit: You're right. It's only on the way down. Good to know.

It's not about Lack & Kassian. It's about trading anything for something that is going to be free in a couple of months.
I see both of those players as trade-able assets but why waste them on some player who is going to be a UFA. You do understand what an Unrestricted Free Agent is, don't you?

- Marwood

Of course. I may be in the minority here but that's ok. I don't view Lack and Kassian as these long term 'assets' that many on here do. I get patience but there is also a time to strike. And I'm not saying Benning will move Lack/Kassian for JUST Franson. I'm sure in a package deal Benning would make sure we have assets coming back. I understand Lack's and Kassian's current value but IF mngt is taking offers on Kassian why wait until the summer after Kassian has COMPLETELY tanked out this season? Then we get a 3rd rounder for an 11th overall pick? A 3rd rounder that will never crack our lineup.

With Markstrom and Jensen at the ready Lack and Kassian are more expendable than people think. Their 'asset' status is dwindling...and it isn't a slow boil.

For sure.

I like Lack, but both could easily backup Miller.

Whichever one brings us the best return is the guy that has to go. Wouldn't even mind dealing both if it is better that way- but would guess we are getting a goalie back.

If we dealt both, we'd still have Eriksson, Cannata and Demko...

apparently JB is pretty interested in Matt O'connor from BU. I imagine he watched him lots when he worked in Boston. His numbers are pretty rock solid this year. Would be awesome to have him and Demko moving forward

The short answer is YES - the only time a player can be "claimed" is on the way down…up doesn't exist anymore.

He's a college free agent. Apparently Benning and 29 other managers like him. He might be temped to come here. Once Lack or Markstrom is dealt the starter job in Utica becomes available and Miller is only signed for two more years. It's highly unlikely we get him, but you never know.

He's a big body goalie.... 6'6" apparently

I don't see the point in wasting a contract, unless he plans to move one or possibly 2 of Markstrom/Lack/Ericsson
50 contracts and6 of them on goalies + Demko. Seems pretty foolish imo

Thank you. Agreed

The only thing I will say is maybe Cody can excel with a great d partner ala Hamhuis or Tanev. A very conservative and smart player. None of then on the Toronto d currently.

If he can move a couple of them, for sure sign the guy... not costing a pick, just a contract.
